Sounds funny, but let me explain.
I have a bike that needs a service and MOT before I sell it. Currently has not MOT or insurance. The shop that can do that work is about 15min walk, so I would like to push the bike there, get work done and push back. My feeling is if I did get stopped they may ask me for insurance but anyone know if keys where not in bike where I would stand (apart from next to the bike).

I think pushing anything over a a small crosser would get tedious on a 15 min walk. If you can't ride it, do you know anyone with a trailer?

Take the plates off and tell the policeman that it's for off-road/track use only?

Do it in the dead of night?

The chap from the MOT place picked up my bike and rode it to the MOT when I had a similar issue with my bike.

If not riding it you don't need "road risks" insurance is the answer to your question, however having once had to do this with a Honda 250n, believe me it is hard work.

That was about 3 miles though!!!!

If it's got wheels and an engine, it's a motor vehicle in the eyes of the law, even if it's being pushed. It requires insurance if it's on a road (which can include a path).

Ask any of the kids who got caught pushing their 'crossers along the A45 to Coventry MotoPark...

I pushed my Vespa 300 just a mile in 32c heat. I didn't realise the human body could sweat so much.

At least I was not wearing my gear.

Did the same with my Street Triple years ago when it ran out of petrol. Thought, no probs, petrol station is only a mile away.

Luckily it was late at night but I was in full gear. Damn! I got hot.

Risk of getting caught is small, but one I'd prefer not to take.

Either get the workshop to pick it up, choose another workshop who will pick it up, sort some insurance or borrow a van or trailer.

Maybe a friend or relative can add it to a multibike policy for you and ride it there for you?

Pushed a 500cc Triumph 5TA, I'd just bought for £12 to use as a field bike on the pavement eight miles from Manchester City centre (with a mate) when I was fourteen. Hard work as the back tyre was nearly flat. biggrin

Just to add, I knew a guy who decided that the sensible thing to do after a session in a pub, was to go out in the road and push his bike round the back of the pub for safety and to lock it up.

As he started pushing the police turned up and breathalized him.

He got done for being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle.

MOT not an issue as en route to pre booked MOT test

As it’s a Motor vehicle it requires valid insurance to be on a road or other public place regardless of whether it is stationary, under its own power or being pushed

Most bike places can collect.

That or ride it there. Though that depends where you live.

I can only presume you intend to sell it without using it, or it's not your bike. Otherwise, why not insure it? You're covered to ride it to the MoT test then.

As advised above, even the smallest bike repairers have a van for delivering / collecting motorcycles. Shouldn't be more than £40 to £50, well it would be round here. smile

He said he's selling it, so one can assume he doesnt want to bung £80 in the bin for insurance.

Personally - I'd push it. Mean bloody copper who nails you for that. Depends where you live I guess. Hardly every see a cop car where I am.

I believe it needs insurance and MOT even if pushed.

Sorry, didn't read the obvious. rolleyes

However, all vehicle insurance has a 14-day cooling off period so he could insure it, ride it to the garage and back and cancel shortly afterwards and only get pro-rata cost. Less than £20 I'd have thought, and worth it to avoid the risk / cost of a ticket, and cheaper than paying for van collection and delivery.

Only insurance. There's an exemption that allows driving/riding to/from an MOT appointment.

I'd see if the garage can pick it up or if you can get temporary insurance.
