Won't let me TAX with green slip ref
Discussion
You may have been given the green slip off an old V5c.
If it had been replaced, the one you have is not valid. Or it's been a very long time since the change of registered keeper.
The new keeper slip will have the same number at the certificate number on the front of the V5c but with an extra digit at the front.
If you do it with a digit removed, you'll be taxing it using the previous owner's V5c, surely?

Registered keeper has had it for 7 years.

Which is why I mentioned it. When they sent the 'new' type out to all registered owners, they had different certificate numbers. A friend of mine rang me up in a panic unable to tax his mother's car about 5 yrs ago, turns out she was trying to use the wrong V5c certificate number. The post office just use a barcode reader so if you are trying to use the wrong slip, you may have to apply for a V5c at the same time. That's £25.

I've just checked the tax status online, it's still taxed in his name.

However, it says there was a V5C issued last year, so I would guess a change of address. And this slip does't have that date on it. So I think he actually has given me the out of date one.

I don't think it was anything untoward he was struggling to find all the paper work at his house. That said, I have in reality handed over the cash and driven off into the proverbial sunset without the paperwork.
It didn't cross my mind to scrutinise if it was the latest V5 or not.
I know where he works, so at least I can go there in person should he not sort this out in a timely manor tomorrow morning on the phone.

Is it possible they had it taxed as a disabled vehicle? My previous car was and had been with the dealer for over month. I couldn't tax it online but it was still showing as taxed so I drove it home and taxed it at a PO the next dayHowever, it says there was a V5C issued last year, so I would guess a change of address. I was looking online to see how to tax a used car. I found the following...
if you've just bought the car and don't have a logbook yet, you should have a number on your V5C/2 supplement. This is given to you by the previous owner.
... but what if I'm buying the car from a dealership 100 miles away and they can't just give me the V5C/2 because they're 100 miles away?

You simply complete change of keeper and tax it online before you leave the dealer's premises.if you've just bought the car and don't have a logbook yet, you should have a number on your V5C/2 supplement. This is given to you by the previous owner.

Being the old V5 was the most likely outcome. But, I cannot get my head around putting a car up for sale without knowing where the paperwork is?However, it says there was a V5C issued last year, so I would guess a change of address. I sold a car recently and the buyer transferred ownership and re-taxed the car online before he left the house.

People on here are generally, by definition, a bit more switched-on about car stuff than most other folk. When I was in the trade it always amazed me how many people would rock up to collect their new car with absolutely no paperwork for their PX. In the end I created a checklist that the sales execs gave out at point of sale, then they'd ring the customer the night before handover to check they had everything to hand.I sold a car recently and the buyer transferred ownership and re-taxed the car online before he left the house.
