According to the Bucks free press. A driver was booked for doing 100 in a 70 on the A5, and got an £80 fine and 6 points. There was a £34 victim surcharge but the fine must have been a few hundred surely?

It's possible, low earner, income related fine less discount for an early guilty plea, there is likely to have been costs as well as the victim surcharge, so in the end probably not a lot of change out of £200

Why does it worry you so much?

It doesn't worry me in the slightest, I'm just curious to know whether it was a misprint. If the behaviour wasn't reckless and the report is accurate I'm quite impressed by sense shown by the magistrates.

It isn’t a misprint. It’s simply someone with a low or no income.

The magistrates have a formula to calculate the fine, so I wouldn’t give them too much credit.

I assume it goes into a pot to be divvied out to various victims/causes.

Getting off with only 6 points for 100MPH instead of a ban is pretty lucky in itself.

Still don't understand in this day and age why 100mph is worthy of a fine at all!

Is it? I've watched a few of those police camera programs and 6 points seems to be the norm.

Because nobody in power has the stones to accept it's a backward looking, outdated approach?

I’d say it’s the normal. I’ve stopped countless people at over 100 and very few get banned (along a 70).

60s are more common to get banned at for 100+.

Because the maximum speed limit is 70mph.

So the reason 100mph is illegal is that it's against the law, thanks for clearing that up.

I don't think it's a matter of intelligence here. A police officer has to toe the line whether he/she agrees with it or not. I doubt we'll find out the answer to that one.

Let’s be honest, half the population can’t be trusted to drive safely at 30 mph, nevermind 100 mph.

Some people need telling what to do for their own safety. Everytime you hear about a collision, that’s why we can’t have a 100 mph limit

On top of that, many cars have a top speed of less than 90, and lorries and vans even slower, especially up hill. If we had closing speeds of 30-40mph, or more on hills, all the time it would be carnage on motorways.
