It's been ages since I studied that section of the highway code in any detail, but assume it's still illegal?

About 10am this morning around Junction 2 heading North.

I think some of the high speed tractors can be specified/registered in such a way as to be legal on the motorway, but it would've be for fairly specific use case. I.e. not an agri vehicle any more

If a tractor cannot do 40mph and/or is registered as an agricultural vehicle then it is not allowed on a motorway

If it can do 40mph (eg JCB Fastrac) and is not registered as an agriculture vehicle then it can use a motorway which means registering it as a road haulage locomotive (DVLA speak for a heavy vehicle that does not meet HGV construction & use regs) and operating with an O licence, tacho, etc

Unimogs which do up to 56mph can be used on UK motorways. Ireland have no restriction on tractors.

They do .. tractors in ROI must be capable of and travel in excess of 50 KPH and must stay in the inside lane only

Perhaps faster if limiter has been fiddled with! There is a well known video from lorry cab on a DC when a Fastrac cruises past in Lane 2, and to add insult to injury it is towing a trailor!

Guy Martin did 153mph in a Fastrac at Elvington. Which is about what a moderately fast car will do there.

Might have had a few more mods than a limiter defeat...

It definitely wasn't a FastTrack

Just looked like a modern large tractor, with burgundy paint

Wasn't there a PH'er managed that in error recently?

I can personally vouch for having driven a Unimog on a British Motorway.

I wouldn't exactly call January 2020 recently wink

I'd be curious whereabouts on the M40, what time of day, what conditions... Because that incident was the convergence of illegal signage and the cover of darkness with a propped open gate at Junction 7.

As for motor vehicles, the minimum speed for being allowed on a motorway is 25 mph unladen. There was of course a nasty fatal a few years back on M23 involving one of the veteran cars on the London-Brighton run. They were in lane 3 at the time to avoid diverging onto the M25. But as far as I can ascertain they were a legal motorway vehicle, top speed of 30 mph.

It was a lovely sunny day. Northbound between the A34 and A43 junctions. The guy was happily pootling along the hard shoulder looking like he didn't have a care in the world. We were driving past matrix signs showing a warning, I thought they were a joke until we actually saw him.

A1M had gantry warnings about one yesterday, although I didn't see anything so might have been a false alarm like they usually are
