Our local council appear to have fked up with a road scheme. What takes legal precedent here?
The pictoral sign, the written sign, or the physical barrier?
Yes I realise a bus coming the other way wins. biggrin

The worrying thing there is the newspaper article mentioning that it's only "eagle eyed" people who've spotted the issue.

Those signs usually work in pairs, with both set up to give priority to vehicles exiting the piece of road between them. I’d give precedence to the words rather than the arrows.

But it looks like the road ahead is fenced off and closed anyway. So does it matter?

Surely it just needs turning around?

The island is on the left hand side of the road so the words are correct, some bright spark in the council has just put the wrong sign above the writing...

Trying to be a little bit serious with this, I'd go for the picture. I'd like to see if there's an opposing sign that would be correct now (you can see there isn't one on the photo), thus making it easy to judge what's going on. On Google Streetview, there's nothing to set a precedent as of July 2021, not that it would carry much weight. I'd go with the picture, because it's easier to recognise quickly and react instead of reading the instructions, and the smaller blue sign further down looks like it's got the same picture (not that you'd know this driving past). It's easier if you're not a native or fluent English speaker, too.

There is also a post & island further down in the oncoming lane which hasn't got a sign at the time of the photograph.

This is true, and in practice (disregarding the barriers ahead), because of that, most road users would wait if something is coming the other way. Legally? I guess any offence would be driving without due consideration for other road users, whatever signs are showing.

It's a shame that the txt is even needed but many arent great with traffic signs.

There are a quite few chances to pick up mistakes like this, the last line is the contractor, most would know that's wrong but sometimes people "just do what they are told". I guess it depends on the relationship, technically the engineer probably made a mistake but someone could have spotted it before it was installed.

I think that only person who made a mistake in this instance was the installer. The back board will have been fitted first , then the two separate stickers applied afterwards. They've applied the text sticker the right way up (might have been more obvious if they hadn't) but fitted the arrow part upside down. Simple to fix, just peel off the arrow part and replace with an identical sticker, only this time, the right way up.

.. and surely someone has to sign it off after it’s installed? This is buck-passing (like the Grenfell tragedy, but on a much less devastating level).
I agree that text should never be needed - maybe a giveaway sign is all that is needed?

This. I'm not sure I see the issue if the intent is to control priority at the sign post itself, either that or the blue sign in the background has been installed the wrong way round.

That was my first thought some scallywag has been spinning the sign, but if so it's at the wrong end of the chicane, cock up by council put correct sign in wrong place, unless the other sign is correct!

That sign is never going to right. It doesn't matter whether it is in the wrong place or not. No amount of re-positioning it will make any difference.
There is no such sign.
Red circular signs give orders, you can order someone to give way, you can't order someone to have priority.
You can inform someone they have priority, that's when a blue sign is used.

Quite simply, the sign is upside down.

Someone has just stuck the circular sticker part of the sign on upside down.

Our dopey Highway department in Somerset put ‘Give way to oncoming traffic’ at both ends of the restriction. Luckily most users are regulars through them and ignore the signage as appropriate.

I don't think that's how they make signs.

They just want a sign that says "He who dares wins".
