Lorries going more the 56mph
Discussion
So had an interesting run in trying to pass a lorry in lane 3 that was in lane and a elderly chap in a honda jazz going 65-66 in lane 3, the lorry on a hill was level pegging with us at portishead on the m5.
A well known screw supplier and hardware retailer.
I assume if you go into neutral that overrides the limiter allowing him to match with us at 66mph down the hill.
Surely his tacho will show the event?

They'll go through the limiter going down a hill, even in gear.
Certainly would show on the tacho.
So police or dvsa stop them and what happens the elderly gent nearly crashed as don't think he was up to racing a lorry was all abit sureal.Certainly would show on the tacho.
You can get a lorry above 56 easily with a hill and a bit of weight in the back, the tacho will record it as an overspeed event if you go above 58 for more than 30 seconds. Some companies monitor them, others don't really care! VOSA will only intervene if they stop you and there are loads on your card or lots of continuous ones.
Was it a GPS 65-66mph? I got stuck behind a Civic recently at 45mph, but when it was safe to pass I could clearly see their dashboard showing 50mph. I was in a HGV going through motorway roadworks with a 50 limit.
A lot of HGV's have variable cruise control that will slow at the brow of a hill, but then coast to 60mph downhill. Sometimes indicated speeds match GPS speeds, but it's not uncommon to be 1 or 2mph out. Some operators won't allow overspeeds (and treat it as a company infringement) but some allow overspeeds with no "friendly chats".

I have a accurate speedo in my car and was showing 65-66mph yeh the old boy would have seen 70.A lot of HGV's have variable cruise control that will slow at the brow of a hill, but then coast to 60mph downhill. There could be a variety of reasons why he done it. I've overtaken drivers doing less than 50 who then speed up to go past as soon as I've pulled back in to lane one. Five or ten miles down the road the same thing happens. If I encounter these idiots in my car I usually sink the boot to leave them sitting, but it's just not possible with a limiter. Too many drivers speed up when being overtaken.
HGV limit on uk motorways is 60mph. If loaded to full they will roll away above the limiter even on slight slopes, I never let to go above 60 but some lads take piss imo. It’s equally annoying as a trucker when you’ve just overtaken one and they come back past on overspend then you need to overtake them again when back on the flat and theyve slowed back down. What’s the point.
There was a driver that got caught for doing 80+ coming down the A66 by a police gun.
Iv also seen car speedos well out the worst a Nissan leaf showing 58 in massive numbers on his dash and I was passing him a decent pace in my truck with a 52mph limit, on the flat no downhill cheating.

Problem seemed to be the old boy seemed to panic with my behind lane 3 and the lorry easying up his inside in lane 2, sadly this time of year a lot of people take to motorways If I encounter these idiots in my car I usually sink the boot to leave them sitting, but it's just not possible with a limiter. Had an HGV right up our chuff on a 50mph downhill roadwork section on the A9 near Bankfoot - at an indicated 60mph. Couldnt see a gap at all in the rear view camera. Mrs 5 was having kittens! Gave it a short burst in the av speed section to create a gap but he just closed it as soon as we were back at 55mph. Unusual behaviour from an HGV driver on an A road in my experience - tipper truck drivers excepted!
Colloquially known as Mexican Overdrive
Trucks will still over speed when in gear, although some are smart enough to deal with it when on cruise control using the exhaust brake
My mate gets particularly angry when driving Dafs as they run away and only warn you when the tacho beeps as it pings you for an overspeed event (which happens if you’ve stayed over the limiter for a decent amount of time)
My knowledge beyond that is limited, but I assume it’s not an issue up to 60 in the U.K. but you can expect to get probed if you get pulled in Europe and they read the tacho
There are also the more dodgy truckies who have tacho defeat devices although it’s a proper reaming if you get busted with one. My mate usually generalises about Irish trucks for those sort of shenanigans

In my last job driving artics with waste trailers on I would get 65 down a good hill, the weight pushes very easily!
As said the tacho usually gives you a warning after 30 seconds so I would brake, pull it back to 56 for 2 seconds, then let it go again.
Most will do it, nice little break from doing 56 for a few hours.
It's not really an infringement that DVSA care about, unless you have a load of other faults.

I used to do Europe as an owner driver of a Volvo FH 16 ( 16litre 750hp 2400 lb ft) . The last company I worked for CetVa Malaga involved pulling tilts from Malaga to Calais with
1 tonne bulk bags of polished stone.
Time wasn't on your side doing this in 5 days but the torque monster Ovlov pulled 100kph on the AR gradients in top gear fully freighted which slashed journey times albeit at the expense of economy. Regularly these trailers were loaded with 36 bags (6 extra bags over the tri axle trailer bogie) equating to 50tonne + gross. Many companies ran this weight but were rarely pulled. The heavies always went through the Pyrennese at Huesca/ Jaca avoiding the scales. Regularly it was 120kph on downhill sections especially if we did return runs to Italy going Mont Blanc from France into Italy on the many kms of downhill section.
The old tacho paper discs were easy to 'adjust' but the later digital tachos not so. The Spanish never seemed to care though...

Not lorry specific, but the other thing these scumbags do is over take you, then ease off the throttle once they are alongside you, as you start to close on the traffic in front. Absolute c**ts, yet there are so many of them.If I encounter these idiots in my car I usually sink the boot to leave them sitting, but it's just not possible with a limiter. I do sympathise with HGV drivers in 50 average zones. It's annoying enough for a car driver being stuck behind some cretin doing 45 in lane 3. Always thought they would have been better to set a 60mph limit in the roadworks. At least then HGVs are less likely to trip over slow cars in lane 1, and the whole thing would flow better without lorries changing lanes so much. Obviously I'm ignoring the safety aspect of a lower limit.
