Under the totting up procedure I have a six month ban. That was two months ago, and I really am not that bothered about not having a car - I live in the city, I travel a lot, Uber aren’t too bad, the train is great (well, until the strikes started). Anyway, a couple of days ago I got a letter from Sussex’s marvellous constabulary saying an SP30 I got two years ago, (which I queried at the time but did not push and coughed up as you just know there’s no point), which they finally got around to reviewing , and have written that signage cannot be confirmed as complaint - a temporary speed limit sign may not have been in place. That conviction was the first of four that totted up to the 12, so without it I would still be on nine points.

In the short term I CBA to do anything, I’m away for the next two months anyway. What are my options and best bet for the medium term? Let the ban run and restart on zero points? What will insurers say to someone coming back from a ban, a city dweller driving a ludicrously expensive to insure car already? Is there an appeal process for my ban anyway? What would you do?

I’d contact Agtlaw who resides on this forum. Literally an expert in this.

As above. Surely if you can overturn the ban then that will have a positive impact on your future insurance costs if little else

Could be a great shout at a consequential loss claim too

What does it matter? You don't care about the ban, it's nearly over and you are as rich as Croesus so the money is of no import. Ignore and move on

Point of principle?

Go onto the price comparison sites and do examples with 9 points and also a ban.

Not much different then I’d be tempted to let it run, otherwise you’ve got 9 points looming over your head.

Point of principle so fight for it.

You were banned for infringing the rules on four occasions, if you didn't do one of the offences because they didn't get it right then you've been banned improperly.

Makes no difference that you don't mind. It was improper and they are at fault.

IANAL - I would suggest that damages are due, but they would be limited as the court would no doubt take the subsequent points into account - and possibly the circumstances of those.

agtlaw would seem the obvious first port of call.

When you are as rich as the OP, your know points of principle are way more boring than being on the beach

I wouldn't spend any money rushing to get your licence back, it doesn't sound like you'll be able to hold onto it for very long anyway hehe

I'd certainly follow it up to get the "Totter" removed from your licence.

Any legal fees will easily be paid back via the "un-hiked" insurance premiums. Ins Cos take a dim view of direct bans.

They can if they are clear cut and more binary than opinion.

I'd be calculating the additional costs to you of using taxis and public transport, the lost income, the additional insurance costs, and putting in a claim.

If you don't want the money they send you, send it to me. Or a charity of your choice.

A sideline question: if you get a ban from totting up, do the points then get removed from your licence?

As you are not bothered then wait until ban is over = 0 points
Then appeal, get first SP rescinded, still 0 points but ban removed = cheaper insurance too.

Witchcraft! But good shout. Although I could see the 9 points coming back into play maybe.
