can i use an old v11 to tax my car ?
Tax is due 1st February

No reminder letter, and I don’t want to spend an hour hunting for my V5
Same car/address for last seven years and it’s only 20quid to no existing standing order for payment.

Anyone used an old V11 as I have one in my hand now

I very much doubt it. The 16 digit number on the V11 will be no longer valid when you try to use it.

These words on the dvla website seem slightly open-ended ?
Why not use the word current ? Define recent?

Tax your car, motorcycle or other vehicle using a reference number from…

a recent reminder (V11) or ‘last chance’ warning letter from DVLA

Try it and see what happens, that way you will know for certain.

Why not type in the reference number from the paperwork you have in your hand and see what happens?

Nope no joy
At least I know now, see below….

You may have entered the details incorrectly - please try again….

The 16 digit reference number on your V11 reminder form is valid from the 5th of the month in which your current vehicle tax expires until the end of the following month.

Since you need a V5c anyway sooner or later, you may as well bite the bullet and apply for one at the same time as buying tax (VED) at a Post Office. It will cost you £25, and is what you have to do if it's been lost by a seller or trader. You can check the reg online to see the last time a V5c was issued:

I used the ref number from an old New Keeper slip to tax a car a year or two after I'd bought it once. I can't remember why, there was some reason I needed to do this.

I thought reminder letters came about 2-3 weeks before due.

Yup they do - I think OP is a bit quick off the mark to renew.
I’ve got tax due on one of my cars from 01 Feb and no reminder as yet.

Apart from when there are strikes by Royal Mail that is. rolleyes

My elderly parents VED reminder arrived on New Year's Eve (I agree, it's usually 2 - 3 weeks early, mine was). In a slight panic, they called me, and I did it online for them; they would normally have gone to the Post Office. I've a feeling I've started a regular thing there....
