Given this is the second copper from the Parliamentary & diplomatic protection command to be convicted of extremely serious offences in the past couple of years, the Met have difficult questions to answer.Lone wolf/Bad apple/lessons to learn don't really cut the cake for an elite unit operating around the highest echelons of society.

The vetting system is not fit for purpose and they know it.

Quite amazing really. Who are the bad guys in society these days? Is it grim irony that so many coppers found out or is it that they know how the investigation works so get round it? How much does vetting work?

How on earth does an officer in the diplomatic squad last so long with so many allegations made about him over years?

I would have thought that the position of looking after the very highest parts of society and Government officials would have required the ultimate level of background checks on an ongoing basis. To have the nickname "bd Dave" should have raised eyebrows at a minimum and a lot more based on common sense.

It really does appear that the Met in particular has no appraisal process worth mentioning and no review process that serves a pro-active purpose. In my old world of finance if you had rumours circulating around about behavior (in the office and out of it) people were at a minimum spoken to quietly but officially and they then knew they were being monitored for future issues.

Surely there needs to be people from the top down here removed from office and a complete restructure of this particular branch of the Met to get any confidence back.

"Now the reporting restrictions have been lifted, the Guardian can reveal that part of the reason Cressida Dick was ousted as Met commissioner in February 2022 by the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, was the Carrick scandal, as details emerged of his offending and possible Met errors."

She must have laughed all the way to the bank.

Seems to me that the Met vetting system should be the same one my vets use for dogs - bks removed as a matter of course.

A serious topic but that did make me chuckle!

They had Yvette wotsit ("Rene" Starmer's best mate) on Radio 4 discussing it. She was banging on about why hasn't the Met changed its procedures, but both this one and that murdering bd Wayne thingy had been in post for a decade or two, so changes now wouldn't have stopped this. The problems seem to be with older officers.

Another day, another corrupt and dangerous copper.
Nine opportunity's to prosecute and the Met let every single one go.
He relentlessly raped and terrified woman over 20years.
The standards and vetting procedures need a major overhaul.
It should be life with no possible parole.

I’m sure we’ll get a high ranking Mr Plod sitting behind a desk with his well trained apologetic face on, rolling out the same well worn-out scroll and reading the large text................”LESSONS WILL BE LEARNED”
Until next time!

Performance management has long been a joke in the public sector. Management treat it as an irritation and staff think it's a waste of time. There are reams of processes and procedures but no will to get rid of problem staff.

Wouldn't be surprised if the elite units have a greater tendency to attract psychopaths and those who believe they're above the law. Add to that a macho "locker-room" culture and it's no surprise to hear about misconduct cases.

On a lighter note I once had a junior trader join a firm I was at who was christened "Bungalow" after one day on the floor as he had nothing up top.

I had the same with the less restrained qualifier that 'He has f*ck all going on upstairs'

I realise that any anecdotes are not indicative of an entire force holding very poor values and judgement but about 20 years ago, my girlfriend then was going through police training and f*ck me it was eye opening. The rampant misogyny, racism mixed with almost guaranteed infidelity and affairs with colleagues was just a horrible petri dish that just bred a culture of covering up misdeeds and leverage on colleagues to blackmail their way to doing as much as they wanted and anyone with ANY inkling of joining the force to stand up to wrongdoing was immediately isolated and bullied out.

I can't see how that's ever going to change. It's a cult in many respects.

What's needed is another Sir Robert Mark to remove the dross from the Police as at the moment they seem like an out of control gang with no accountabilty.
