As far as I can discover we are the only country in the world that uses the endorsement system. A motoring offence is dealt with in the same way as a criminal conviction - it is kept on record, affects how you are dealt with if you offend again, insurance etc,

Everyone else appears to deal with minor motoring infringements as an isolated instance which is dealt with by way of a fine. More serious matters lead to arrest, driving bans, prison, vehicle confiscation etc. but each dealt with on its merits. When you hire a car abroad nobody cares about endorsements.

Does anyone else use the endorsement system? Now the motorist is considered an income stream, is it likely to change?

Australia has a points system. Points are deducted from you, as opposed to added in the uk.

The same as France. IIRC in France you gain 1 point per year back

I know that Poland has a point system, where if you accumulate more that 20 points, your licence is suspended for 6 months. However, the slate is wiped clean every 12 months, which I think is better that then 3/4/5 years system that we have in the UK.

Also Poland has a recidivist scale for fines, therefore if you are a repeat offender, the standard fine doubles each time you are caught.

Not only do a lot of countries have a points system, a lot also have tighter prosecution thresholds & more draconian penalties.

In South Aus you don’t lose demerit points, you acquire them. All drivers start with zero points. If you accrue 12 or more demerit points within a 3 year period you will be liable for disqualification.
For speeding:
by less than 10 km/h 2 points
by 10 km/h or more but less than 20 km/h 3 points
by 20 km/h or more but less than 30 km/h 5 points
by 30 km/h or more but less than 45 km/h 7 points
by 45 km/h or more (excessive speed)* 9 points

NSW: the number of demerit points you can accumulate before they suspend your licence:

unrestricted licence – 13 points.
professional drivers – 14 points.
provisional P2 licence – 7 points.
provisional P1 licence – 4 points.
learner licence – 4 points.
unrestricted licence during a good behaviour period launch – 2 points.

The same in Spain where you start off with 12 and they take some away if you transgress, but for good behavior it is possible to go up to 15 max..
Minor speeding does not affect points balance though, just a fine.

I really like the idea of a 'no caught bonus' - up until now I've been spectacularly successful in not being caught, it would be nice to have got an extra point a year to spaff way in my twilight fast driving years.
