A colleague of mine at work queried this with me a few days ago.

He has had a complaint about him making noise through the council, fair enough, new couple previous ones weren't bothered etc, easy mistake to make if you like music, gaming, films etc.

But also attached on this letter from them was a note that these people could smell cannabis, the obvious insinuation being that the person making the noise was doing this.

He was visibly upset by this, as he has had family members affected by drug usage in the past.

My question is can anything be done about someone making a false accusation here? it is only advice, not a warning, but to just throw it out there among a noise complaint does seem a little off and very presumptious and also it is quite a serious allegation?

Probably just trying to make sure the of the greatest impact, best advice would be to find who & have a chat to them & spark up lines of communication.

It’s not that serious an allegation. It’s likely just an initial letter from the councils asb team. Not unusual to address noise and smell/smoke nuisances together. I assume the letter probably has the council officers name and contact details on. Call them up have a chat, explain the situation. The. Go from there.

They likely don’t care about the drug use it’s more the nuisance, it could of been smell from dog mess, rubbish, normal cigarettes etc.

I'd be amazed if the cannabis smell was down to somebody just smoking the odd joint. More likely it's one of his neighbours growing it.

Happened near a bus stop two streets away a few years ago. Everyone that stood at the bus stop complained about the funky smell. Then eventually a boarded up bungalow was raided and they found a Chinese guy alone and hundreds of plants with all the paraphernalia. Apparently the commuters complaints went unanswered but the electricity company knew the house was unoccupied but it was using thousands a month and tipped off the fuzz.

I'm amazed that anyone would think it was acceptable to think that, but to then type it?

ETA
and I see that my above comment is no longer relevant as the stupidity it referenced has been removed

Honestly at times the humour of people on here really does show you why forums are dead. Thanks for those seriously replying, to the rest, well i reckon you can guess. This was a genuine query reduced to taking the mic out of someone trying to help a mate out.

However you get your kicks I guess,

Stop digging... Your deleted post was offensively racist - the mods clearly thought so.

I too thought it was offensively racist. The OP thinks it was just a typo. No-one has an issue with you trying to help a mate, but you then crossed a line...

If it bothers your friend that much he needs to contact a solicitor to see if he has a case.
