Hi

in 2018 (yes, I know, a long time ago), I bought an outside table/benches made out of GRC (Glass Reinforced Concrete). The item is no longer for sale but from the web archive I found the original page, and can see that the following features were highlighted:

• It is unaffected by the weather making it perfect for outdoor use with the knowledge that it will look the same in December as it was in January.
• GRC is crack-resistant and will tolerate all the wear and tear you can throw at it without being ruined.

This was the main pull, as I'd given up on wooden furniture given that it looked crap/fell apart in no time at all.

In late summer last year the top coating of the table began to peel and since then it has got much worse. It now looks crap and I'll no doubt be buying something else in the near future.

However, I'm a bit pissed off as I bought the thing given the implied indestructibility, and an implied lifetime warranty. Had it not been for these claims I wouldn't have bought it.

No warranty was quoted on the webpage for the item, nor was anything indicated on the invoice.

I contacted the seller (big garden centre company) and they say the warranty was only 2 years. I can't find that on their contemporaneous site. I did find:

6. Faulty or mis-described goods
6.1 In the case of faulty or mis-described goods, you are required to email or phone us with the details. If the goods are in fact faulty or mis-described we will make arrangements with you for the return of the goods to us and will provide a refund.

Does anyone think I have a valid claim here?

Given the lack of any warranty wording, I don't think you have a straightforward claim from the garden centre. You could try an argument centred around the CRA stating that 4 and a half years is not a long time given the rotten things are effectively made of stone, and you are happy to take a partial refund as store credit.

No chance of refinishing?

No....it's well buggered. Will try the CRA once they respond.

Sadly, I don't think you'll get much joy.

GRC is tough stuff, it's used in construction (e.g. House Cladding) but it's not pretty so it's generally coated and that's the bit that's not durable. A lifetime Warranty would probably cover the structural integrity but not the finish, as it appears to be in your case. It's very common with warranties, for all sorts of goods, that cosmetic appearance is either very limited or excluded from cover.

Always worth a try though.

There are flowcoats for grp - often used on boats & a quick google suggests there is similar for concrete.
Worth a look?
