Yes, I realise it's actually 'Vehicle Excise duty'.

In my excitement for the first signs of Spring I taxed the car. always pay monthly. Taxed from 1st March and the first payment goes out on the 15th. I've since realised due to work, holidays and hopefully being drunk, I'll not use the car until at least April so wondering if I can save myself £45.

What happens if I now SORN the car and cancel the direct debit?

I've a feeling I know what the answer is but wondering if anyone has an ACTUAL experience?

You can only get a refund for "Full" months. As its 6 days in you will still be charged for March regardless of wether you have used the car or not.

Cheers. Thought as much. I'll leave it as is. Potential for hassle and I actively avoid that.

Next year it drops the 40k additional party

A couple of additional points of note:
The dvla online system wont let you retax the car for a number of days after declaring sorn (maybe 7?) i think you can do it at a post office after filling in numerous forms no doubt.
You may still get a direct debit payment taken if you sorn on the last day of the month, dont panic it gets refunded automatically after about 10 days.

Both examples from my personal experience.

You have to remember that you don't pay for your VED on a monthly basis, you pay annually by installments a bit like your insurance (if you pay monthly). Cancelling your DD without declaring SORN will land you in trouble.

Presumably then refunded? It’s widely known a direct debit starts being applied for a number of days before it is taken.

I didn’t know that! It’s Still not refunded, I’m not sure whether the pain of chasing the DVLA is worth the £24!

I change VED status frequently on my cars and always buy the full 12 months. Yes, it's a bit of a pain waiting for refunds after SORN but I avoid this happening, plus you pay the 'man' 5% for the privilege of paying monthly....

I always cancel the DD on sale, or SORN. No hassle, no worries.
