Afternoon all,

I shopped at a new Heron store yesterday afternoon. that is in a converted pub. A friend sent me a link to the local paper last night who ran an article on how many shoppers have been fined £100 for parking in that car park. You apparently are not allowed to park there and have to park at the rear. 40 mins allowed.
I went back and looked at the signage today. I admit I didn’t notice the grey signs, just the main entrance pillar signs, read the ‘free parking for 40 mins’ and didn’t read any further.

Have I got a chance of fighting it? I must add if I’d been caught fair and square I don’t have an issue paying fines, I just feel in this case it’s not unreasonable to drive though the entrance, see the ‘40 min’ blurb and park up.

Thanks

Going by similar threads, there are plenty on here who will pathetically roll over and just pay it. Personally, I'd appeal it based on the fact there are no road markings, no 'no entry' or 'loading only' signs, and the text on the private parking sign is tiny ('twas ever thus!).

How is it enforced? ANPR?

Heron though... very council!

I love Heron !

The parking company's blurb states all their signage complies with legisation.

There is CCTV in operation. I guess they then pull your details from DVLA.

I am sure they do say that.

Also Heron is great for bargains

Surely those grey signs are from when it was a pub? Assuming the pub was “The Lonsdale”?

Should a parking company still be enforcing them?
The signs on the main entrance pillars say 'The Lonsdale' yes, I did wonder about that. The grey signs on the building just say 'Private land'. I didn't notice any of the grey signs yesterday, I wasn't sure if it was even open because of the boarded windows (it has been derelict for ages), but when I saw the lights on in the main entrance, I went in.

Why do you think any of that is grounds for appeal?

There maybe grounds, but not on the above

That's the weirdest Heron store I've ever seen!

Converting a big old pub into a freezer store is quite bizarre, I'd love to see some pics of the inside.

(Somewhat missing the point of the thread I know)

So let me get this right…..A shop with off-road parking outside is fining customers for parking there? has the world gone mad?

eh, I don’t get it. So the free parking was only upto 40mins and the OP overstayed that time and so got a ticket, even though legitimately shopping in the store?
No. The OP parked in thecarpark for less than 40 minutes but is being "fined" because the parking company is enforcing conditions that applied when it was a pub.

Questions. When Heron took over the site presumably their lease was for the whole site. So any parking charges which depend on an authority supplied by the previous pub leaseholder may no longer apply.

Are those signs compliant.

No idea about either. If I was the OP I would be heading over to Peipoo to get better advice.

1930s by the look of it, but with some twenty first century tarting up. Appears to have been built in the old roadhouse style, given the former use as an hotel and the size of the car park. I digress.

Any chance of an appeal to Heron directly? That may be scuppered by them not having the lease for the relevant bit of the car park, however.

They're being fined charged punitively for parking in the carpark/tarmac beer garden of the derelict pub next door; I'd be curious how many actual permit holders there are.

I've just got visions of inside being swirly carpets, polished brass, varnished oak and an open fire... with rows of chest freezers!

This car park isn’t ‘next door’ it’s the grounds of the Heron store. The 40 minutes free parking applies to the car park next door(!) As the pub is on a crossroads, depending on which road you approach, to get into the ‘free’ car park you (I) would drive past the ‘entrance’ to Heron, left at the traffic lights, then left to park behind the pub /Heron.
