A few months after I sold one of my cars cheaply to a ‘geezer’, I checked the DVLA tax/mot site out of curiosity. Weirdly, no matches were found for the registration. Is that an indication that the buyer switched to a private plate? I shouldn’t check on my old cars tbh…

Almost certainly. The original number will have been removed if a personalized plate has gone on, and won't be applicable to any specific vehicle record until such time as it is either put back or reassigned.

If you are so inclined, this will show the new plate. I do sometimes check my old cars, see if they're still alive, it's a bit sad I know.

Thanks, found it! The car's still going, so its new owner must have fixed it up and bought private plates.

I search for mine sometimes when I'm bored biggrin

Had a text from the DVLA the other day telling me the MOT was due on a reg plate I'd never heard of, but it was about time the MOT was up on my old Fiat 500 I sold about 4 years ago. A quick google and the plate returned to a Fiat 500 so I'm guessing they have put a private plate on it now.
Not sure why they text me now though and not sure if they were supposed to reveal it's new number either, but nicety know it's not fallen apart yet.
