High. They are generally offered up to and including 31mph in a 20, so you're "lucky".

I think the maximum speed at which you may be offered a speed awareness course is +10% + a further 9 mph above the posted limit.

Hi, just had my first ever speeding fine through in the post, caught doing 30 in one of South London's 20mph zones.

First ever fine in 25yrs of driving, what do you think the chances are of getting a Speed Awareness Course?
If (in your words) you have "just received my first ever speeding fine" then I would say 0% chance as you have been fined already.

You are offered a SAC before it gets to a fine if it is appropriate.

This was my thinking from recollection, pretty sure I was given the option when I had the initial letter, I didn't have to apply to do a course after getting the penalty, it was offered.

I don't think you have received a 'fine'.
If you tell us precisely what you have received it may be possible to assist you.

Apologies, not familiar with the vernacular.

The letter said ‘Notice of Intended Prosecution’ and it does state that I ‘may be offered a course’ on this letter.
In that case fill it in & send it off, you will be told in due course what the offer is.

Ignore him, standard PH stuff, there’s always some dullard know-it-all waiting to pick up on people not using exactly the right words. Everyone else understood the question beer

Right result.

Online or in person?
Take the offer, attend and have a positive attitude and an open mind.
You may/will learn something, and it will go quicker if you participate.
I thought I knew it all when I did my first one, after 43 years of driving, and was surprised to find I didn't.

Take an online course if you can, I think most of them are these days.

Takes a few hours, with breaks. The main thing you'll learn is how thick others are. And you'll learn not to drive into cardboard boxes on a runway.

Yep, I’ve opted for an online course. £90.

2hrs 45min.
The one my wife recently did for 35 in 30 (caught by a red light camera) took an hour to register everyone and had a half hour break.

I asked her afterwards what she’d learned and she couldn’t think of anything. Usual answer from the in person courses is you learn how little everyone else knows but I suppose that’s not so apparent online.

Just out of interest how was it signed? A zone or regular repeaters?

Imho 20 limits are an absolute pisstake.

It's a really bizarre system that complains that speed is a killer, yet the faster you go the faster you are allowed to exceed the limit before prosecution.

Allowed 16 mph over at 70mph yet at 30 only 12mph!

More likely to harm pedestrians in a 30 zone, though.

I think they are good when used selectively and when they only apply at certain times of day - e.g. outside a primary school is fine.

Agree. I saw the ultimate 20 sign the other day. A circular sign, with 20 in red font, white background, black circle! I guess some are taken in.
