2 coppers were hanging around the Waterloo and City line this morning with dogs.

One had a springer (very cute) and one had a Labrador. Why would they have these breeds rather than the usual Alsation? Are they sniffer dogs of some kind?

My Uncle has always kept Police dog's, used to be in dept. but now takes retired ones. Anyway most of them have been great though one, Cara, tripped me up in textbook style flick of the ankle when i was about 11. Cue visit to doctor's surgery and fresh stitch in skull. still eye alsatians cautiously. but that belongs on the other thread.

Springers, Labradors etc make better sniffer dogs though as to why I don't know.

Think they are more focused for longer periods. As for the spaniels, they are obsessed and love a good sniffing game.

We have a border collie drugs dog. Absolutely mental thing. It goes into a room and literally hits all four walls at once.

Both game dogs and bred for retrieving. Ist in genetic make up.

Our labradors are completely mad though...cute, soft und very friendly... but mad.

Alsatians.. fierce looking und very good at hunting down und downing a man. Bit unpredictable I fear as family pet because of this "hunt" instinct.

Spaniels were bred for hunting and shooting as were labs. Smell where game is and point to it. And retrieve shot game. So the genes and breeding result in dogs which can be trained easily,(though spaniels can be very frisky when young) and have good noses.

{My parents owned 2 spaniels. I also was on beater on a grouse moor when a student.. for several years. Good exercise, poorly paid but it had its compensations ..:-) See how the other half love..}

Its a team thing. They use the Springer to find drugs or explosives. Obviously, its a dog, so cant differentiate between "exciting" scents, so they need some way of analysing the substance so as to ensure that they have the villain bang to rights.

That's why they have the lab.....

Coat on, running for the door.

Did a warrant at a brothel once. The only thing the spaniel found were countless pairs of soiled knickers. Daft as a brush that one was.

I have a springer..........total mentalist, but top nose. Apparently a springer can recognise a scent from only one molecule!!!

My sis and bro-in-law have just got a one year old Alsatian.

Apparently it didn't make the grade as a Police Dog - not fierce enough or some such thing.

Personally I reckon they chucked him out on honesty and integrity issues - he's a thieving bastard - he'll nick yer grub from right in front of you...and shove his nose in the feed sack if given half a chance...
