Was driving home after purchasing myself a new car today. On the M1 (or M6 I can't remember now) smart motorway and the speed limit dropped from 60 to 40 between gantries. I was slowing down and was probably doing 50ish on the speedo and I 100% saw the camera flash. I wasn't a alone and I was going ever so slightly faster than the car on the inside of me. Question is what is the chances I am going to be getting a fine? Seems harsh doing people for doing what is probably sub 50mph on a free flowing motorway but I appreciate I should of slammed hard on the brakes in order to be safe.

Anyone had a ticket from these motorways with the reduced speed limits? Possibly them "testing" the camera? Heard that before?

Hopefully they let me do a speed awareness course rather than points.

I had a good stamp on the brakes in similar circumstances last night, sh*t driving on my part, but a wallet f**king avoided.

They should be a bit smarter than that:-

“ An exclusive investigation by Auto Express found drivers have 60 seconds to react to a new limit being displayed on a smart motorway overhead gantry before cameras start snapping them for speeding.”

Relax, you'll find out where you were when the NIP comes in.

Why would you need to slam hard on the brakes to slow down from 50 to 40?

Doesn't sound much like safe or competent driving practice.

I was being sarcastic. Just a bit grumpy of the prospect of getting a speeding ticket for doing 48mph in a 70

There’s quite a distance between the two. Were you awake at the time of the incident? wobble

There's not that much of a distance between them where they join.

You didn’t need to answer him. He knows very well that you were being sarcastic, but just can’t help himself.

Indeed, they overlap for almost quarter of a mile at M1 J19. Leptons obviously wasn’t listening in the geography class. smile

Take it from me - after 8 years at the pointy end, drivers rarely know which junctions they’re between & often don’t know which motorway they’re on.

It was a long day and a lot of driving. I think it was on the M1 shortly before joining the M6. Pretty confident that was the case.

Didn't realise this was going to become the topic of conversation otherwise I'd of just said it was the M1.

Why, most people use a form of Sat Nav so won’t feel the need to know.

So are you saying you went under a 60 gantry & could see the 40 on the next gantry or are you saying you went under a gantry when all were saying 60 & by the time you got to the next one all in front of you changed to 40?

There is a big difference between the outcome depending on which it is & you don't state which it was.

Not all gantries have cameras on for starters, so where were you in relation to the changed limit when you saw a flash in front of you? Had you by then passed the 40 or the 60? I ask because you have to have passed the gantry before you are deemed to have exceeded the limit, the limit starts in a direct line from the newly posted limit.

So, if the change happened as you were between gantries then there is a time period where you will not be done for it.

If the change was already in place and you went under and were flashed with your speedo showing 50, then in reality you were probably actually doing 46ish and likely nothing will happen.
