Ok I am looking advice after having my car insurance cancelled here in NI.
So long story short, had insurance for a month, went with a NI company as I had 3 points years ago for no seatbelt and the code would not work using UK comparison sites. So the usual speel came through online saying I was covered and I left it at that. Then Tuesday passed I have a missed call, I went to the online chat as you cannot ring them and was told documents were needed by tonight or policy is cancelled, these were both licenses, car and paper copies (n.ireland still uses these), plus 9 years no claims.

So, I uploaded no claims and driver's cards, thing is we had both lost paper license and so again I went on to the silly chat to be told, "start application for paper license and policy should be ok " I then called dvla as site was not working proper, was advised no big deal and give third party permission and they can call us for points, if this no use pay £7.50 for temporary license document. Again I went back into the chat and was told this will not sit with the underwriters.
So after back and forth I eventually said just close the insurance then, I then got an email at 17.00 to say they would be going ahead with the closure at 12 midnight.

Now, I never received a letter to warn me, yes I received an email on the 23rd but it was generic and the title was, 'important documents," the attachment it had was a cancellation notice, again it was not titled this. I even visited the office but was told to complain online again as they do nothing face to face. I realise they probably carried out their duty using the email but I'm almost 40, I would have preferred and acted upon a letter.
I chatted eventually with their CS team and.stated, "it's not about the money, I can't have this on my file for a simple error on my part," they said it's already cancelled but could do away with cancellation fee and their commission.

I'm very annoyed, I realise the onus was on me but never in the past had I been asked for so many documents, and honestly it probably would have changed nothing as there are over 50 negative reviews in glassdoor and Google regarding similar issues with censored insurance.
Again, do I have a leg to stand on, or just suck it up buttercup?

May I just add, whilst writing this they rang me to state it counts as a cancellation but there is no file held, or mark on a database with your name on it, so I said do I have to state about a cancellation and he said if they ask yes. I'm at a total loss tbh.

From your description, you cancelled the insurance not the ins co. You issued the instruction and they acted on it.

That won't be a problem for declarations in the future.

Thanks for taking the time to reply mate, they are useless it would seem and have told me it counts. I rang Adrian flux and they were great, said errors regarding documents don't usually add much and usually only count.for 5 to 7 years.

Was the seat belt offence in Northern Ireland? It’s not endorsable in England. Glad you got it sorted.

Did they volunteer that or in response to a question from you?
I'm not sure it matters what they say, more the actual course of events.
Hope you get it sorted.

Yeah it was in NI and this why I always used a local insurer as no code came up with . I have got new insurance and I realise I made an error not checking emails correctly, but this thing of sending an email for such a cancellation needs to stop. I will just have to declare it appears in the future, going to the Financial Ombudsman appears to do nowt. Thanks for any advice!

I asked was this recorded and he stated there is no file as such or marked on a database, but yet he said I would have to state cancelled. Also the email on the 23rd stated a cancellation date of the fourth, is the day I used the silly chat to say, "just cancel it then." It was after me saying this at 5pm that I received an email to say it would be cancelled then at 11.59pm. thing is, I can't get a straight answer.from anyone to say how I find out what's on file etc, Adrian flux stated that I would have to say but due to documents it does not push a premium up much. Again mate, thank you for your help! Emmet

Other insurers only want to know if an Insurer cancelled the policy- in your case you did so you can truthfully answer no.
I would email their complaints dept and ask them to confirm they didn’t cancel it as talking on the phone to them sounds pretty painful.
Good luck.
