I do not fortunately have to use motorways that often.

But when I do the level of middle lane hoggery is beyond belief, and even worse on 4 lane sections.

My question is what is causing it because it was never this bad in the past?

Is it laziness, is it lack of education, it seems to me that on a 4 lane people think the left lane is a 10 mile slip road or trucks only so will sit in lane three?

I seem to spend most of my time on motorways now undertaking people in lane 1 at a very reduced pace!

What is the answer? education? they have tried it and it seems to achieve nothing?

I will also say that the profile of a lot of people doing it is very singular! Is this poor parenting, education again?

Variety of reasons.

But
The smaller the spread of speeds the more likely that people will stay in lane (The USA system)

The wider the spread of speed the greater the need for a keep left, right on continent, unless overtaking (The Deutsche system)

I suspect in the UK there is little impetus to deal with it, we are moving to congested roads with very little spread of speeds, even the matrix boards will declare "CONGESTION - STAY IN LANE'.
The more people experience that, the more the behaviour will become ingrained as a norm.
