Rules for receiving a NIP from a test drive
Discussion
I haven’t received a nip I’m just curious
I test drove a f31 340i shadow edition on Sunday from a bmw dealer they just passed me the keys and took my licence and I signed a form they just left me and 2 friends to go on a test drive surprisingly as I’m only 25….I could say I had abit of a play on the motorway
I’ve always wondered what the procedure is if you get caught for speeding by a speed gun/ camera van or flash? If I was the registered keeper it’s something like 14 days from the offence? obviously on a test drive the dealer is the RK I’m guessing, so what sort of timeline would you have to receive a nip?
I bought the car and picked it up 2 days later haha

The thing you signed was a waiver accepting liability for the speeding tickets….always read what you are signing.I test drove a f31 340i shadow edition on Sunday from a bmw dealer they just passed me the keys and took my licence and I signed a form they just left me and 2 friends to go on a test drive surprisingly as I’m only 25….I could say I had abit of a play on the motorway

Yeah I understand that I’m liable, i just wanted to understand timelines ect for example if the dealer received a letter. by law what has to happen after that, does the 14 day rule not apply to me from the date of an offence as I’m not the registered keeper? Jmac97 said:

So if the dealer responded to the nip, legally what is the time scale for me to be notified?
I don't know what the ultimate limit is but with the lease cars we have at work they can sometimes drag on for months. It's been an issue where people have been up against it to get a speed awareness course as they have to be taken within 4 mths of the date of offence.Jmac97 said:

I think 14 days is for the police to send to the dealer - the dealer would then inform you.

So what speed were you doing when it flashed ha
Nothing actually flashed its when I got on the motorway I was testing the car alittle to much, I was only looking at the Speedo and cars in front, not paying attention to the bridges ect where the cash cows sit, obviously my fault for speeding but I didn’t realise how quick it got Upto speed passed 100mph if nothing was there I’m fine if I’ve been caught in knackered lol I can speak from a position of experience here. I borrowed coincidentally a BMW for a long weekend test drive a few years ago. I got caught speeding on a mobile camera on the first day, Saturday. By Weds the dealer had the NIP and rang me. They nominated me as the driver and I received a Conditional Offer FPN a week or so later.
The 14 day rule applies only to the RK. Once they have nominated the driver, there is no real timescale. I think there’s a 6 month overall limit. I don’t think I got a NIP I got a form to admit it was me and the conditional offer, although my memory might be playing tricks on me with the timeframe and order of the official paperwork.

If the dealer is nominating you do they have to get in contact first? The 14 day rule applies only to the RK. Once they have nominated the driver, there is no real timescale. Go on then, how does a "waiver accepting liability for speeding tickets" work? Who do you think would be liable for them if you didn't sign it?Aretnap said:
