Just watching 'Cop Car Workshop'. The dramatic announcement that their new car has a 1.6 litre engine didn't impress, but I was surprised to hear that it has a special light facing backwards that (quote) 'keeps speed cameras at bay'. How does that work?

It's a light that's permanently illuminated (rather than flashing) when the lights are on, so that on a speed camera picture it's clear to see that the blue lights are on - which is related to the exemption from speeding (although I'm sure the legalities are more complicated than that).

EDIT - more info here - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

There was a TV show about the Mersey tunnel (?) which the admin of querying police forces for police vehicles when using / not using exemptions to work out if billed journey was significant, and the solid blue helped cut those down earlier. Can't find it now.

As not all speed cameras get you from behind I would say it was a lot of rubbish being talked by whoever said it maybe?

Just seen previous post, how do they get around cameras that get you from the front?

Special light blabla its just s static blue light, that a camera will capture!

Static gatso lights are not a police only thing its just a blue light on perm so when a speed camera team processes it, this should show the car was being used on a bluelight run, still in some cases paperworks is served so that proof of an emergency call and process has been follow say for non trust ambulances have been followed.

You would be surprised the amount of private blue vehicles I have come across, I mean some Event First Aiders are going out and having convert and overt setups

Ah, because the two photos/flashes might fall between the flashing of the blue lights... that makes sense.

So I can't just get one on eBay for £9.99, bugger!

No see one static on front its for gatso which are all rearward as far as I understand. Only old truvelo from memory that takes front stills.

The foward facing bus lane cams in london and such like have a video which they take the still so those the lights can been seen when viewing footage.

I'm sure Truvelos are still around. In fact I'm surprised they didn't 'evolve' to be the speed camera of choice because the driver gets less warning.

Non flashing blue light installation was common on Ambulances too.

Unless they’re digital, I doubt they’ll be active. Wiltshire hasn’t got any working fixed cameras afaik.

Used to be the case in Strathclyde that speed camera triggers were dealt with by an audi. A record of thecamera being triggered would work it's way down to shift level where a supervisor asked the driver where he had been going IE what incident. If the incident log confirmed the unit was actioned to the call and an emergency response was justified then all good.

Though that was back when there were fewer cameras. Perhaps now they audit a sample? This applied to marked and unmarked cars. So if there was something on the CID were going to they would shout over the radio for the controller to log them as attending the incident if they were passing cameras.

On response we know where our cameras are and just let comms know we have had a camera activation, they add it to the log for us and its dealt with, never heard anything other than that to be fair.
We are more lucky if our emergency kit is working the state of some of our kitbiggrin
