It would appear that several Gatso's have problems when I pass them within the speed limit driving a large boxy MPV with a car trailer on the back.

On three occasions recently I have been flashed, without any comeuppance yet, (but you try it on SCP's!!)

Am I correct in suggesting that my car & trailer is breaking the beam of the radar at several different ditances? & causing it to produce false speed readings? & hence the flashes as we all know them.

If anybody wants to experiment please let me know, would be happy to show you what I'm on about.

It's probably one of these new 'dangerous driving' gatsos taking a picture of your trailer to see if it is somebody tail gating you. You should feel a lot safer knowing they are there looking out for you.

Hi Declan.

For Gatso enforcement: a vehicle doesn’t ‘break a beam of radar’, instead the beam gets reflected back to the sensor (in the camera housing) with an amount of Doppler shift, the amount of shift being proportional to vehicle speed.

Were you on an NSL travelling at the usual car speed limit?
Your mpv and trailer could be reflecting back so much signal that together they are being interpreted as being a truck, these being subject to a lower speed limit (the photos would of course disprove this, hence no prosecution).

Steve

PS, I had a small problem timing wise, but I got around it.

Thus anyone driving around on NSL roads (and maybe 50mph non dual carriageways) with an mpv and trailer (or a car derived van and trailer I guess) is providing a public service when they pass an active Gatso and use up a couple of frames of film.

I suspect the size of your vehicle is fooling the gatso into thinking you are a lorry and apply the lower speed limit.

Do they really do that? I had no idea Gatsos were so smart.

The A303 Wyle one seems to know if its a lorry or not, someone mentioned the road sensors set the "lorry Mode" off, I've certainly seen it flash trucks on the 56mph speed limiters before now, many a time.

Beware The limits are lower on most roads for Car's towing! Not something the governement shouts about.
