V5 Certificate
Discussion
Bought a used car and received the V5C sellers supplement, but the seller didn’t have the actual log book as he had lost it. Taxed car on line using above, no issue. Then went to Post Office to fill out a V62 form and include the V5C sellers slip with the V62 form, as there’s no charge if done so, not allowed photo copy etc. Went to the PO counter to be told by the lady I can’t tax car on line as I didn’t have the V5, explained I’d already done so using the sellers slip (standard practise) and she seemed surprised and confused. I then went on to explain I needed to send off the V62 along with the V5C sellers slip and she refused to accept it, quoting they are not allowed to do so
I reiterated that the previous lady I’d dealt with told me do exactly as I was doing and the form made it quite clear that the original V5C sellers slip had to be enclosed as well. Anyway, no matter how much I tried to explain I was following the V62 form advice she just wouldn’t have it and told me if I wanted to send them off together it was my prerogative, but against her advice. So here I am, totally confused and can’t speak to the DVLA as they are experiencing a high volume of calls. Any advice given would be a help as I’m about to go back to the PO and keep fingers crossed she’s clocked off for the evening.

You can check you have the latest V5C by checking the date here and that showing on the slip you have

If you do in fact have the latest document then just do a change of owner online here.

Well I was sort of correct. I returned to the PO with the completed form and whilst there I explained to a different lady, this morning’s escapade. She told me that if I’d returned with the completed V62 form and new owners V5C slip they would have taxed it there and sent all the documents off for me. Unfortunately I’d already taxed it on line using my V5C slip and have now posted both the V62 and new owners V5C slip off first class signed for to the DVLA.

You can’t register the car online without the original V5, normally the seller’s responsibility, but he’d lost that and only had the new owners tear off slip. V5 log book has an 11 digit reference number (needed for re registering) and V5C new owners slip, has a 12 digit number, so you can use it to tax, but not change ownership. If that makes sense.https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax

This is somewhat muddled, to clear up the first bit of confusion firstly the Reg doc, logbook or whatever you choose to call it is a V5C, it is not a V5, A V5 is only used a the dealer for the first registration of a new car.
The 2nd bit of confusion is not so clear. If the seller has given you the green new keeper slip then they must have the whole V5C as it is a tear off part on the bottom, so I don't know how they are saying they don't have it

He mentioned previously he had all but sold the car, so much so he had removed the sellers green slip to complete the sale, then things fell through. He then had several more enquiries without success resulting in dropping his price and me being the first person to turn up. By then he said had absolutely no idea where the V5c was, but had left the green slip in the car. True, or false who knows, but everything checks out with the car and hopefully the new log book will arrive in the next fortnight.

Just do everything on line. Simplest and most reliable way. You could do the ownership transfer using the green slip, and tax it at the same time. Just remember it needs to be between the hours of 07:00 to 19:00.
Indeed it is, but you need the whole V5C to do it online, not just the new keeper sliptony wright said:
