I’ve been caught on a 40mph dual carriageway 50 in a 40, my first ticket in 20 years. He looked like a road surveyor, hard hat, work boots, hi vis etc.
And a silver estate car. It was when I noticed the camera not on a tripod I thought ticket collector.
My question is do they have to be in any police uniform or vehicle to nick you.

No. It's off to jail for you (or actually a SAC or 3pts & £100)

No they don't.

Have you actually had a NIP?

Hard hat, work boots and an estate car indicates someone policing an in-roadworks site speed limit, rather than the public driving past.

Could have been a surveyor??

No, the ticket arrived this morning, my local retired Bobby told me they can't do that.
I thought he was wrong.

The general rule of thumb in most cases is if you want to know anything about the law, don't ask a police officer, more so a retired one!

Were you speeding? Yes. Then show some balls, take your medicine and stop whining like a child.

Didn’t sound like whining at all to me. Just a forum member asking a reasonable question.

Are you sure it was a hard hat rather than just a normal police hat? Seems a bit odd.

But no, they don’t have to be in uniform.

Reasonable? Well very common anyway, the usual PH "how can I get off this charge?"

He's be done for speeding. He knows he was speeding. End of.

The OP simply asked if they had to be in uniform. Seems reasonable to ask and if the Police are going to start to use fancy dress disguises then we are a motoring forum may need to know that.

Very true!
As an experienced criminal lawyer I have lost count of the amount of times a client has told me what a police officer has told them will happen or what to expect in court only for it to be absolute nonsense.

Interesting though. By law fixed speed cameras have to be sign posted, painted yellow etc but mobile units can hide with no signage to warn of their presence.

Why the sanctimonious response? The op was looking to see if there was a way out. I’d do just the same as would most people.

Sadly it looks like there’s no way out of this one.

“Most people” would take it on the chin as a fair cop, not try and weasel out of it.
Probably a representation of the kind of person you are.
