How long does it normally take for your online tax status to be updated after renewing ? Did mine at the begining of the week (received confirmation email and money has gone out of my account) but on checking it's still showing due at the end of the month - Am I being a bit too impatient ?

What are you waiting for? If you've completed the online process and you've received your confirmation email then that is all that you require (Aside from insurance, a valid license and MOT, of course) to drive your car on the public roads. You don't need to 'wait' for any further type of confirmation. I bought my last car, transferred ownership and taxed it about 15minutes before I drove from the showroom to home. Your confirmation email should look something like the below:

THIS IS AN AUTOMATED EMAIL - PLEASE DO NOT REPLY AS EMAILS
RECEIVED AT THIS ADDRESS CANNOT BE RESPONDED TO.

Confirmation of vehicle tax.

Thank you for using DVLA Vehicle Licensing Online.
Your application for vehicle tax has been successful.

Vehicle Registration Number: Dxxx xxE
Reference Number: 9229 xxxx 3162 xxxx
Application Made On: 26/11/2022 15:29:55
Vehicle Tax Period: 12 months
Vehicle Tax Amount Paid: GBP 360.00
Last 4 Digits of Payment Card: **** **** **** 1234

The law has changed, you do not need to display a tax disc, therefore we will not issue one to you.

You may wish to save or print this email confirmation for your records.

I've got all that. Not worried (yet) about using the car but what happens if it hasn't updated on the system after the renawal date. I assume this is what the Police use to check so not looking for any hassle

You've paid, you've got evidence you paid, just get on with life and check in a week to see if it's updated

If you are worried just print off a copy of the confirmation email and keep with you or show the Police your email on the phone.

Just for the OP I've taxed one of mine 2 minutes ago, due to expire end of May. We can share notes on how quick the vehicle enquiry page is updated (or not give a toss, it's been paid).

The link under the tax status on the Gov Vehicle Enquiry Service says it can take 5 working days. If it's still wrong after that, there's a contact button to press.

Thanks - I'd missed that

Yes, you are being impatient (I would say fretting). You have the confirmation.

Does this help?

I had my car SORNED a couple of years ago and stored at home.
30th November I taxed it, insured it, MOT'd it.
1st December I decided to go and have a look at a car at a dealers 20 miles away in Lincoln.
On the Lincoln bypass I got blue-lighted by unmarked plod, and pulled over into a layby.

Plod comes around to my door with the Police National Ipad in his hand, and is visibly shocked that it is a smartly dressed geezer of 67 in the driving seat, not the usual under 25 hoodie.
Conversation goes along the lines of "do you know your car is showing as missing tax, insurance and MOT, Sir?"
I explained, he said "do you have the receipts on your smartphone, Sir?".
I invited him to come and sit in my passenger seat while I looked.
I managed to find the tax and insurance, at which point he said thank you, no need for any more, and departed.
I hadn't even farted.....

Better still is to print off the renewals and have them in the glove box for the next few days.

Police ANPR is not real time, so it will never be 100%.

As long as you have proof and pass the attitude test you will be fine.

Mine was due 1 May 2023. Taxed it early April. Took about a week before it changed to "Due 1 May 2024".
