Our local TV this morning was saying that if you get nicked by the local scam that you can then view the evidence at the above site.
HOWEVER, it also showed a unit in action on the M4 (near a bend naturellement) with the unit showing 81 in red LED on the back. I presume that means that 81 was the trigger level?
Tony :)

The trigger level on the M4 is apparently 79mph.
Well - one of the first things that Peppipoo and the like tell you to do is request the photographic evidence 1) to identify the driver or to see if the driver can be identified, 2) to use up the SCP's resources and cost them money.
It is a natural response by the SCPs to streamline the process of providing reasonable disclosure of evidence using I.T. Now you can see your evidence straightforwardly at little or no incremental cost to the SCP.
They would appear to trying to ensure you see your own evidence and no-one else's by requiring you to enter a code printed on the paper NIP - so they are taking reasonable precautions to ensure privacy.
All it is is a minor escalation in the war between them and us - as it were.

I'm horrified by reading through the material on their site.
I drove this road yesterday, and the traffic is jittery, and that is not to the benefit of safety. At the hint of someone on a bridge (a chap taking his daughter for a walk on her tricycle, the one I saw) brake lights come on and lane discipline goes out the window. Traffic bunches up, people who aren't slowing veer out of the way of those who are. Tailgating increases.
I was making very modest progress, but admittedly above the posted limit for much of the journey, and found myself scanning bridges and hard shoulders more than I usually would. In fact the hazards were where they always were -- driving the cars around me. My levels of concentration are very high, but I was struggling.
This was all outside of the four or five roadworks areas - some of which are reduced from NSL. In these areas, compliance was good by most traffic - genuinely slowing to 40. Ironically the one I accidentally went too fast in today was incorrectly signed.
As anyone here who knows me, I am a complete nut about safe driving (and spend my time in a vehicle where the notion of a crumple zone is "bend-ze-knees"
- I just don't think that the threat of speed traps has done a lot to travelling speed on the M4 (most cars were travelling above the posted limit, but probably below 85), but it was noticably less safe yesterday.
I'm not looking forward to autumn and the first greasy roads and fogs on the Marlborough Downs. There has to be a better way.

This happens frequently.
I was following a car last week comfortably at 73mph (I noted my speed when I saw the scamera van), but the driver in front of me saw the van and braked, slowing right down to 65mph (I had to slow down too because of his reaction, so I know how much he reduced his speed by) before pulling into a gap in the inside lane traffic.
I have also noted the following comment on the website: The mobile speed enforcement camera team operates from highly visible vans with bright, distinctive markings (even during hours of darkness)"
Not so - I have seen the vans parked on the bridges on several occasions, and it is impossible to see the camera logo on the vans as it is obscured by the barriers of the bridge. e.g. http://secure.safetycameraswiltshire.co.uk/content/sitephotos_MA0.html

"We trust that by providing access to this information, we can help change people's perceptions of safety cameras. They are not a revenue-raising exercise, and are there for the safety of all road users."

If you look at the picture on that link there are 4 vehicles approaching the camera van on the bridge - 3 of them appear to have break lights on.
some of the stuff in the "information" section of that site is remarkably close to misinformation...

My NIP arrived more than 14 days after the offence. Shouldn't I have been advised within that timescale?
The notice must be sent to the Registered Keeper within fourteen days. If your notice arrived after this, it means that you have already been named as the driver/keeper/hirer.
I drove along the M4 on Bank holiday monday at about 8.00am, the road was empty. I was making progress when there was a scamera van on a bridge and as others said even though the cars that were there were okay the automatic reaction was to brake. As I went towards Swindon there was a Lamborghini making rapid progress towards the van I hope my flashing lights were enough to slow him down to the threshold.
this van was purley for revenue, it was sighted on a slight bend on a bridge obscured by the concrete, this on a virtually empty motorway. The operater was just catching people who were passing through the area, they should be really proud of their work.

Got done @ 90 on the A303, and used the site to view my pictures.
clear pictures of me
good photos really, make sure it wasn't car identity theft etc...
obviously it doesn't take into account that it was 9.30am on a sunny Sat and there was only one other car for about a mile stretch....

At least my local scammers get that bit right:

The notice must be posted so that there is a reasonable expectation that it will be served on the DVLA Registered Keeper within fourteen days of the offence. Subsequent notices may be served on other drivers, keepers or owners for the same offence and these will not be subject to the 14 days regulations.

Strange how different partnerships give wildly different answers for exactly the same question!
