I approached a large r.bout, two lanes unmarked but the left lane was seriously blocked as most take the immediate left - I was going 2nd exit at 12 o clock. So I took the right hand lane (two marked lanes all around the r.bout) but as I saw my exit, I noticed it was a single lane exit.

No issue to slip left as all the others were back and turning left but was this 'making progress' or not going to be seen as cricket by the police? HC says 'normally stay left for 2nd exit' but I cannot seem to find a 'you must'.

My move would need a 'merge in turn' mentality if others were in the left lane and I'm not sure I'd risk that on this r.bout now. Problem is, when on 'virgin' r.bouts you don't know your exit is single lane until there.

In the absence of markings to the contrary, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks, good to know was just a bit uncertain.

If you are going straight on you should be in the left lane, unless marked otherwise. The reason being is that traffic to your left might not be expecting you to turn off and cause a conflict. Probably better to 360 the roundabout if you find yourself in that lane in future.

Yes, tend to think I'd do that if I could see cars on my left taking the exit.

The Highway Code is silent on this issue, beyond saying you should choose the “appropriate” lane & then signal left after the exit before the one you want to take.

So in the OP’s case, it seems the choice made was reasonable.

I don't understand why you didn't just go around the roundabout, line up for the correct exit, then exit appropriately?

Because there was no other traffic on his left, and an empty path to the exit?
