Did anyone else get this email from the ACO?

[quote=ACO] 115 KM/H SUR AUTOROUTE :

I can’t understand it all but the gist is that they are thinking of reducing the motorway speed limit in France from 130 kmh to 115 kmh to reduce emissions.

Does anyone know if this is a serious proposition or just a maverick green politician feeding scare stories to the French press?

Looks like Italy is fast becoming the last bastion of “enthusiastic driving” in Europe

Translated using Babelfish.

115 KM/H ON MOTORWAY: The CAR CLUB Of WEST DENONCE A NEW MEASUREMENT REPRESSIVE AND INADAPTEE Under pretext of the raising of prices of the fuels, the government recommends to reduce the speed on motorway from 130 to 115 km/h to save energy and to return at an acceptable contract price. The Car Club of the West denounces and is opposed to this bad idea bus not adapted, for the following reasons: - the traffic on motorway represents only 21 % of the national total traffic. Why not put forward a similar measure on the whole of the road network, by proportionally lowering the speed limit on the trunk roads, departmental and in the agglomerations? - the object of the motorway network is to allow a greater fluidity of the traffic and to ensure a maximum safety (for recall, distribution of the accidents by types of networks: motorways 6 %, trunk roads: 13 %, secondary roads: 30 %, other roads: 51 %). If authorized speed approaches in a strong way of the district distributors, that can cause to lead our fellow-citizens to privilege the latter, and to well too expensive forsake a service become for what it brings. Moreover is the government ready to lower in same time the price of tolls? This is not very serious in term of road safety. - the French are certainly sufficiently responsible to adapt their consumption purchasing power to them. To force with such a measurement would have on the other hand certainly effects on the economic development of our country like on the moral one of the households. Why not go as far as quite simply prohibiting to roll? In conclusion, and if we can consider that such a recommendation in term of council can certainly sensitize the French, we are opposed firmly to a strict imposition of the reduction speed on motorway, which rather leaves think that Mr Perben lets himself rock by the refrain throbbing the lobby anti-speed. Is this the occasion there to make pass, under a false pretext, a new repressive measurement which will be in any event very badly included/understood and not accepted? If such a reflexion were to be continued, the Car club of the West intends all to put in?uvre to mobilize the motorists on this topic while starting by calling with a general mobilization and by boycotting during 2 days the whole of the French motorways. Act for the defense of your rights of road users while profiting from powerful services to live the road in all serenity with the A.C.O., - defense in the event of offences against the highway code, - assumption of responsibility of a training course of recovery of the points of the licence, - breakdown service towing as of 0 km, - and much more... + of infos on www.lemans.org And do not forget: "Today, it becomes very important to be a road user protected and helped. We are at your sides!" NB: If you are already member or if you do not wish any more to receive information of the A.C.O., thank you to return us this email (we will remove your address then). Looks like Governments are considering what impact the rise in oil price will have on their import costs and are reducing the speed limits on motorways to get better economy. Similar to what the Yanks did when they introduced the 55 mph limit some years ago under a guise of "safety". Probably something they wanted to do anyway.

Having just spent a fortnight in France ; bollox ! The 130/110 limit is reasonably well followed, and the roads are much safer because of the absence of HGVs etc. anyway - much more spacious.

However, scumeras have started to go into France ; there seemed to be a lot of "Radar Controles Frequent" signs, though to be fair these did seem to be in places where it was justified.

There is an article in the times today stating that the politician who proposed lowering the speed limit was heavily criticised and that it is quite unlikely that the change, which would bring the motorway speed limit down to 71mph, will take place

It is the signs that say "controle de vitesse automatique" or words to that effect that actually signify a camera rather than monsieur gendarme standing there with a radar gun. They are reliable in that on every occasion they put a sign, the camera then follows a few hundred metres down the road, so of you get flashed you can't say you weren't warned. It does not appear to be like here, where signs as you drive into any given county are deemed enough.

The French cameras are mounted low, about the size of a BT junction box over here, and snap you from the front. They are quite dazzling when they go off right in your face at car height (apparently ) In my experience thay do not yet chase foreign drivers for the cash, but it is only a matter of time before that is corrected I'm sure
