Last nigth I was driving on the M25 near Heathrow and there is a long stretch with roadworks and restricted to 50MPH,I was keeping to the speed limit but towards the last bit the speed had gone up to 54-55 mph and I got flashed by the gantry camera and if I recall right it was a single flash

This is the 1st time I had this happen to me and naturally I'm annoyed with myself and would like to know if they do penalty points in each case?
Anyone been in my situ recently, any chance its a dummy camera?

We can't predict, but we can tell you the guidelines which are followed. Enforcement starts at SL+2%, so if you were doing 57mph or more you might be subject to it. Up to 10%+9 you should be offered a SAC if you've not done the specific one in the last 3 years. Otherwise it would be a fixed penalty and 3 points.

Are you actually saying at 50mph speed limit enforcement starts at SL+2% = 51mph. If so I'm not sure you are right as I've never seen anyone with a speeding ticket for 1mph over the limit?

I’ve had these things flash me when I’ve been waaaaaay under the limit - nothing ever happens. Trucks don’t appear to slow down at all - foot flat to the floor, 56mph in the 50 (tailgating the cars that are doing 50) - they don’t set them off.

Suspect he's typo'd the calc as the 57MPH is correct. it's 10% + 2MPH.

Thanks all who responded and I hope I don't get any points, meanwhile let me keep an anxious eye out for Postman Pat!

I wouldn't worry too much.

They can be flash happy; I've been flashed whilst econo-cruising at 60 by NSL Cameras, only one on the road...

This may help, I was caught for 79 on the M25 in Kent so not 10% plus 2 but looks like it’s 10% plus 1.

Mind you the number of times I’ve been through them at similar speeds over the last 5 -10 years I’m not complaining.

10% + 2.

70 mph + 7 mph + 2 mph = 79 mph.

Your misunderstanding is it's the point at which enforcement begins.

So you'd be safe at 78.9 mph (unlike if it was 10% + 1).

Inicdentally, end of last year, I somehow missed the transition from 50 mph to 40 mph on a dual carriageway, and happily cruised through a camera at 50. Flash flash, but nothing ever turned up in the post!

The guidelines are prosecution STARTS at 10%+2mph. So in a 70 limit 79 is the lowest speed you will be prosecuted at.

I caught a single flash out of the corner of my eye going through a variable limit on the M25.

I was going mid 60s in a 60. I checked my dashcam out later, and it was a single flash only, & I never heard anything.

Ironically I was being tailgated by a BMW who wasn't happy with my choice of existing in a queue of traffic in front of them. So maybe they got a ticket?

I heard one old rumour was the camera flash capacitor could only stay full for so long, and would randomly give off a single flash every now and then? And another rumour they would flash only once if they'd run out of film (the old square ones)

Who knows? Hopefully the lack of ticket might prove on of these?

Doesn't that say lane of red X?

Did you get caught for speeding or going through a red X?

I got a 79 in a 70 as well - very annoying as I saw the van and thought that on a totally empty motorway they’d not be bothered (why I assumed this is anyone’s guess). Wrong!!!!

Not all forces go by the 10% + 2 guideline.

If you were genuinely showing 55 max on your speedo you will not be hearing anything further, so forget about it and move on with your life

This, and.... my Mrs has set off two cams with me as a passenger and nothing came of it. Just don't sweat it until it is a problem, and even then, you are not going to jail....
