Switched cars this year. 2016 Merc C43 saloon to a 2019 Merc C43 estate.

Renewal has nearly doubled with admiral. Only changes are the car change and a no fault £2.5k rear shunt 6 months ago.

46 years old, 25+ncb premium gone from £533 to over £1,100. I have a 3 year old SP30.

Does this feel normal?

Mine increased by a third with no change of vehicle, no convictions & no accidents at all.
(Not Admiral though).

My wife's Admiral quote went from just under £300 to almost £500. No change in circumstances.

Got it back to £310 with Direct Line.

Seems vehicle dependent to some degree in my recent experience.

I thought £1360 was more than reasonable to insure a much modified Evo 8, Boxster S , Mk1 MR2 and Lexus IS300.

Not too impressed therefore to have the premium end up at nearly 2k with the addition of a 2018 Ford Connect......

I use a company called Pace Ward, I thought the van was expensive, so rang around for that. They were the cheapest.

I ordered a new car in October. At the time Direct Line quoted me £640. When the car finally arrived last month they quoted me £2250. Identical car spec and no change in my circumstances (other than being 8 months older) or driving record. Eventually got it for £775 from Aviva.

Admiral tried to more than double mine for an SP30, 58 in a 50 on a deserted dual carriageway. They were just figuring that I would not cancel as I was 8 months in and would not get any money back. They were wrong, I cancelled, then I cancelled my wife’s, son’s and company and moved the whole lot elsewhere and saved money. They lost my business permanently. That’s the only way to deal with such companies, vote with your wallet and they eventually get the picture.

Why would they be adjusting the price mid-term? You don't generally have to inform them of stuff like convictions until renewal - so having a price hike due to an SP30 eight months in seems a tad odd.

Seems right. Admiral state only need to report SP30s at renewal.

"
Penalty points

If you or any named drivers receive a fixed penalty, motoring conviction or are disqualified during your policy term you must tell your insurer at renewal."

In addition to the other point made by Davek, why wouldn’t you get money back if you cancelled mid term ?
Admiral might indeed use short rate terms but they wouldn’t just hang onto any unearned premium.

On the radio, they're saying premiums are up 40% on average from 12 months ago - and I have seen a few people on other forums complaining about sudden increases so it may well be true.

I'm a bit concerned myself - I had a rather large claim last year, and next month I'll find out how much of it they want back

My WRX last year was £215, renewal is £365. I am currently shopping around but comparison sites are coming back with £440 and Adrian Flux £345, broker confirmed prices have shot up significantly in recent months.

Just waiting on Keith Michaels to get back to me, but I am not holding my breath...

Owned the car 17 years, age 46, some modifications and a limited mileage of 4000 a year. Fully comp though with business use.

There appear to be a few interesting demographic-dependent renewals around.

My wife and I insure 3 cars, two with the same company. At renewal time, hers went down (1.4 Fiesta TDCi) and mine went up (E220d Estate). Mrs Banana's was renewed immediately as I couldn't find anywhere doing it for less. Mine was eventually renewed as well, because even though a couple of companies offered slightly lower premiums through a comparison site, they were slightly inferior cover and only a little less anyway. Basically I just sucked it up, but in answer to the OP's point - yes, there do seem to be some "interesting" premium calculations around at the moment.

Big increase, Admiral for a 2022 Ford Focus titanium no changes only a year older (60) - £365 last year and £525 this, got some renewal quotes more than £600 from the usual main suspects.

Given that the insurance industry is driven by risk factors, what circumstances do they have to justify the vast majority (anecdotal evidence from recent PH posts) of quotes going up 40% plus ? Anyone in the insurance industry like to comment ?

It's partly due to supply chain issues in the past couple of years, what would be a typical minor accident two week max repair pre covid is taking 2+ months so courtesy cars would be needed for the duration, insurers were writing cars off for really minor damage due to the wait times.

There's also the fact that electric cars are more risky to repair so assessors are simply condemning them to be on the safe side in bigger impacts/water damage whereas if it was ICE they would likely be repaired.

I tried shopping around for my WRX as it went for £400 per year to £650 on the auto-renewal but couldn't get a better price.

Shop around. I paid £214 last year. Renewal this year is £336. A quick session on Confused and I've got it for £180. They'll bullst you that it's market conditions. It isn't, it shameless gouging.

I made the mistake of being honest and telling them.

I don't think it's really 'dishonest' to follow their T&Cs
