Afternoon All,

Just a quick one to see if anyone has had experience of the following. My Grandfather has finally had to give up driving bless him, he currently had my late Grandmothers private plate on his car. He has always been keen to pass this plate onto my when he finally had to give up driving - I have the same initials as my late Grandmother.

His SL63 is being marketed by the garage which has looked after it for a number of years and they have applied to put the reg on retention for him. I know that he will now receive his V778. In order to sign the VRM over to me I'm guessing he needs to add me as a nominee under section two and sign it. Then pass me the V778 and I can then send it off along with my V5C for my current vehicle to get it assigned - then I will become the Owner of the VRM in the eyes of the DVLA? Is that correct? Or can the VRM just be assigned online using the V778 and my V5C?

The DVLA website isn't that clear when it comes to an existing registration and the transferring of ownership...

It seems that the only way to effectively transfer a plate to your personal ownership (via a retention document) is to have it applied to your vehicle. I don't think you can go from retention in one name to retention in another...

There are options to add a registration and "Change Nominee" in the DVLA Personalised Registrations online account.

Is it possible to add a reg. that's on retention?

You no longer need to add yourself as a nominee.

Simply assign the plate online to the car already registered to you, simple as that.
