I have some dental bills and through my employer have both conventional dental insurance (BUPA) and a health cash plan (Medicash). Neither would fully cover the bills on their own. Combined they would more than cover them.

Presumably since insurance is the only kind of gambling where you're not allowed to "win", only be made whole, I can't just submit the invoices to both and say "pay me up to your limits". So I probably need to get in touch with customer service at both and explain the situation but beforehand just want to check my understanding of the legal position is correct that both would be liable up to their limits, but only in as much as both payouts would have to add up to only the bill, and I could decide how much I would want want each of them to pay up?

Fairly confident about most of that apart from last bit and it may be up to them with all the aggro that implies.

As you are probably “ paying “ for the 2 policies as BIK I think the easiest solution is as you say to call both up and explain.
I doubt it will be for you to decide on the split but if 50/50 sees you made good then that would be a result.

In the same boat. I've a policy from a previous employment with one insurer, as I'd developed and claimed for a condition during that job (non-work related) I kept the benefit paid on as a private individual so that covers me as long as I don't break the policy being "continuous". Interestingly the first year I paid for it privately as opposed to my employer the "valve" of the payment was less. Gone up plenty in the intervening years though!

Through current employer I'm in the work scheme which has different add on benefits as well. Company has used many different providers, seems to change each year, Towers-Willis, BUPA, Medigash, Westfield etc.

Glasses I always spend more than either individual policy an a couple of years of expensive tooth repairs post not been able to see a dentist in Covid to fix what should have been simple. T&Cs have always said to contact in the case other policies may also apply so I have. Mostly response has been a) 50/50 of the claim value each insurer up to benefit limit, b) Oh we'll just pay up to your limit, costs more in admin to apportion we pay your limit just tell the other insurers we've done so, c) when both insurers were the same, only paid up to one limit!
