Police Follow Up from Dashcam Footage- Experiences
Discussion
I would be interested in peoples experiences with sending footage to the authorities.
I had an experience with a repeat "red light jumper " today and it got me wondering if having dash cam footage would have resulted in any Police action. I assume it was a he, passed me as I was waiting at a red light at road works, then proceeded to jump another two sets of lights, carried out a dangerous overtake and then disappeared into the distance.
Thanks in advance.

Not submitted footage from my car but from a "cycling mikey" POV, had two dangerously close passes that have warranted being reported. sent in video evidence and one came back with "shall be taking further action" and the 2nd with " a warning letter will be sent".
I chased up the first, twice, and was hit with a wall of silence from Operations Snap from Warwickshire Police. Annoying but not surprised.

I did submit a dash cam clip to TVP a year or two ago.
The incident was when stuck behind a large farm vehicle at low speed; a car from far back in the queue blasted past when there was no chance he could see the road would remain clear (the farm vehicle turned off very shortly afterwards into a turning that couldn't be seen from behind). Then when I caught him at the next village he over took other cars, well over the 30 limit and very close to a pelican crossing.
Within a few days I had a phonecall from TVP following up: asked a couple of clarifications on what he was looking at then said that as I didn't have speed indicated on my dash cam that it was difficult to prove the excess speed in the village and wasn't totally clear he passed on the crossing, so they'd not take it further. Other than noting the registration so if there were further reports then maybe a trend would add up?
He did mention that they had a turn round time required for checking submitted videos but also that some were frivolous, hinted at a cyclist who was sending them stuff weekly if not daily. Although no action against my particular idiot, they were clearly checking and assessing them, which seemed fine and fair - also that it guided my filter on what I might submit in future, but not had cause to, yet.

We don't report back on what action was taken due to the time it takes. All submissions are reviewed though and decided on what action to be taken.
It's a shame that we don't report back about what has happened as I know people want to know if it's worth their time.
We're going to be informing people of drink drivers what the result was to see if that increases the amount of reports we get.

I’ve submitted two complaints to the police in the past 3 years, backed up by dashcam.
On each occasion, an officer called and arranged an appointment to visit. They came, watched the dashcam footage, asked some questions (description of who was driving etc), on each occasion they immediately told me of next steps.
Each time they were very clear that they would visit the driver and to advise they were being reported for careless driving. I was told if the driver disputed it, then it would go to court. But neither seems to have been disputed.

Here in Herts/Beds there is a portal to submit text details of what you have seen. If this fits the criteria you get asked to submit your video, which is then reviewed. Subsequently you get an email saying either no action is being taken, or no further action taken. No way to find out any further information.
My most recent submission was someone driving through a pelican crossing at 40mph and nearly running 2 people over.

My Uncle was smashed into on his Triumph Tiger 800 a few years ago in central London. He pulled out of a side road, up to a set of traffic lights and was sat waiting for 20 seconds or so - at which point someone smashed into the back of his bike. Bike was written off but he was OK.
He had recently fitted a dashcam to the bike. IIRC he sent it off to the Met on their online portal. Some moronic investigator called up and had a go at him over something - at which point the investigator realised he was talking to the wrong person. Some months later my Uncle got notified that the other driver had gone to court and was given 6 points plus a fine for driving without due care.

What a bunch of complete curtain twitchers!
It would take quite a lot for me to even think of sending dashcam footage to the police, and none of this stuff would even get close to it.

- The crash into a motorcycle
- the nearly hitting pedestrians whilst speeding through a crossing (presumably red)
Are clearly dangerous, and deserve consequences
General speeding, and an unsighted overtake? Not as immediately attention grabbing, but then you can ride your luck for as long as it lasts. It works until it doesn't.
I personally wouldn't send in dash cam footage unless the incident was particularly dangerous or ignorant.
But the idea that dumb ass drivers can do whatever the hell they feel like, and we all just have to sit and watch it unfold or else we'll be labeled "curtain twitchers" is just daft.
The more people that submit dashcam footage, they’ll probably take more police off the roads seen as the public are doing the job for them.
I’m similar to above in that it would have to be something really serious for me to submit any if I even had a dashcam. I see the good in people having them but I’m really not a fan. I’m not into showing everyone what someone’s done wrong. We all make mistakes or do something silly now and again. We’ve got enough cameras watching us as it is without the general public filming us too.
Just yesterday a car cut me up and nearly hit me on the motorway and then proceeded to give me abuse because I beeped him, even though it was his fault. It happened and I got over it. I’d never think of uploading footage of it if I had a camera as it’s just one of those things.

20 years ago, I was awoken by an almighty noise from the road outside. It was around 11.30pm and I was not long asleep. Within minutes, emergency services arrived and closed the road. There had been a serious incident. I could not see what had happened but Police, Fire and Ambulance were arriving. The road was opened apparently many many hours later.
A husband and wife were returning from being to the theatre. They were killed, dying at the scene, by a car with three young lads in it. The lads all survived. They had been tanking along at such speed that the driver lost control, went onto the wrong side of the road and collided with the oncoming vehicle. Sickeningly, the ambulance crew attended to them first, so I was told by a friend living further down the road, who came out to assist.
Just imagine for a moment....that these lads had been previously known to the Police (may be they were), and been reprimanded. These days, they could be in their post test period, when points really hurt. And just imagine, that concerned members of the public had submitted dash cam footage. It's the authorities that decide whether there have been offences or not. Its a judgement call and no one is perfect, but when you know that someone is driving in a really dangerous manner, you reporting it could make a difference. It could prevent someone else from living without their parents.

The likes of these kinds of crashes with young lads etc, dashcam footage / telling off from the police etc doesn’t matter to them. A lot won’t have a licence, and probably not even their car. A lot of things implemented to stop speeding etc doesn’t matter to these kinds of people.
When have you ever seen a stolen car or a pool car slowing for speed bumps etc.
I wish there was something that could be done to prevent stuff like above but nothing they implement works for them. They have nothing to lose.

Fine. Do nothing then. It's an individual's perogative to make a choice. I'm saying....the actions that someone might take, may be preventing something from happening. You might be taking someone off the road who does not even have a licence. They may not kill someone. Its risk management. A well placed report is a mitigation.
