Got a speeding fine through the post this morning from Italy. Naturally I'd rather not take the shaft, so was wondering whether this thing had any teeth. Had a good old search here & SS & Pepipoo but not much on postal Euro fines.

My thoughts so far:

a) This arrived a whole 11 months after the alleged offence. Surely that can't stand? Wouldn't in this country at any rate.

b) There are photos attached, but there are no corroborating road markings although there is a shot from both front and rear.

c) Since being in a tunnel, there is no way of identifying the driver, and I was sharing driving on this trip. There is a form asking me to name the driver and sign... and also to give the driving licence number, which is slightly unsettling .

d) What could they really do if I just ignore this? I'm selling the car in question anyway, so the chance of my coming to the authorities attention is pretty slim, not that I travel very often in Italy anyhow.

File it in the appropriate section - the bin!!!

They can do absolutely nothing - even if you were keeping the car. Don't even respond.

This could well be a scam that has been operated in the past against people hiring a rental. May well have mentioned this before.

If it was real then breath a sigh of relief as at yet there is no EEC/Law that compels payment for such offences committed elsewhere in the EEC. But it is coming very shortly.

PS. Be wary if it was real of going back. They may have certain records?

Cheers for the quick replies! It was my post, no idea how come my username didn't show up.

I'd found some posts about the scams but I'm pretty sure this is a legit item. An Italian friend has confirmed the first two pages as bona fide Italian legalese, and the final sheet shows 3 pictures from high up in a tunnel, which would be very difficult to fake for scamming purposes I'd have thought.

Italian Nationals hardly ever bother to pay fines, just bin it!

I dont know if this helps or not but I have been getting speeding fines in the name of someone else for an offence in italy. These are a plate I dont recognise & a name I dont recognise, the last one was clearly from a court requesting payment. All have gone in the bin. nothing happened thus far.
