Last month I bought and put a private plate on my car. Everything went as it should and the new V5 arrived from DVLA a couple of week ago.

Today I got a Vehicle Tax reminder and to my surprise it has the old reg no. Will a correct one arrive, and if not, what do I do? I can see how to change my address, but not the reg no.

What vehicle does the online VED service say is attached to those registrations?

Tax reminders (V11) are printed quite some time in advance so would probably have been in a pile ready to go before you did the plate swap.

Try entering the 16 digit number into the box on the dot gov renewal site and see what happens. If no luck, then you can always tax your car using the V5 if necessary. Just click "No" when asked if you have the V11 in your name and it will take you to a page where using the V5 is one of the options.

It says 'Vehicle details could not be found'.

Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow and see if it works.

Can you do it at the post office?

There's one only a 10-min walk away, so probably yes.

Let me see... new V5, MOT cert, vast amount of money... anything else?

If the V5 has the correct reg then you can do it online using the V5C document reference number.

Contrary to what many people still think, you don't need insurance to buy VED (car tax). Ever since paper discs were scrapped, people having just bought car have to buy VED straight away and the MID is often slow to update if you have just bought it (cover notes / paper insurance are required in N. Ireland though). If the vehicle isn't insured, DVLA will send a shirty letter but it will take a few weeks.

And I doubt you'd even need the MoT certificate, if it's over 3 yrs old. Scanning the barcode on the V5c means the system checks the VOSA database for a current MoT. smile The advice is always to have it with you but the last time I bought it at a PO (I usually do it online), they didn't even look at it.

You're right; I just got back £695 lighter with just a till receipt to show for it. Cost per gram of paper doesn't bear thinking about...

The new V5 was all they needed.I took insurance docs, MOT cert, DL, three pounds of fresh halibut and a Des O'Connor LP just in case, but none needed.

And so there is something to be said for 'old school' ways with people face to face - invaluable when 'online automated' fails, the website doesn't cater for the issue and the phone line says they can't take your call until 2026.

Thanks all for the swift accurate advice!

I still don't understand why you couldn't have just done it online if you have the V5 with the correct registration number. The website gives you the option to use the V5C document reference number as opposed to the 16 digit number on the V11 reminder. I recently had to do this as the V11 reminder never arrived. Anyway, glad you got it sorted.

Maybe I could, but I poked about on the website and googled into it from various angles until I reckoned PH would solve it quicker. And it did. It's no problem to walk down to the PO as it's in a supermarket and I got some wine and bits and bobs too - overall much nicer than staring at a screen, which we all do too much of already smile
