Just seen some really small what look like cameras fairly high up on the same pole which supports a light to illuminate the roundabout near me, shape I have never seen before, on our local FB someone has suggested it’s to check vehicles have a valid MOT, anyone heard of this before?

Possibly these ones ?
I know they have yellow ones mounted on poles near where I live

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to check whether vehicles have a valid MOT certificate.

ANPR usually catch those driving untaxed cars or declared SORN but being used, or driving an uninsured car which is a criminal offence.

They could use it for expired MoTs but in the scheme of things, this is minor, which is why you don't receive an official renewal notice for it. They'd be busy too, I expect if that were the case!

There may be people who have been 'pinged' by a camera for no MoT but I'm not aware of any, even visiting PH frequently. smile

I have been stopped for no MOT. I have, however, known of people inadvertently driving round sans MOT and not being stopped. It does happen, albeit rarely.
These cameras are also used when plod are looking for a specific car.

If they're really small, and a bit temporary looking then they'll likely be for traffic flow monitoring. If they're a bit bigger and squarer, pointing face on to traffic then they'll be ANPR.

Never understood why they don't have ANPR cameras at petrol stations. No tax, insurance , MOT or SORNed then no fuel, or is that too simple?

No MOT or tax? Bit of a shame if you're on your legitimate way to an MOT test then..... (for which you need neither a valid MOT or tax..)

We are already one of the most monitored nations in the world.

All the Petrol stations near me do have ANPR cameras but they are private use by the business, I guess the petrol stations don't care if you have Tax, MOT etc as long as you pay for your fuel, and they wouldn't want people abandoning cars on the forecourt when they refuse service

Considering the relatively minor offence that driving without MOT is vs driving without insurance, I imagine any data/pings are prioritised for no insurance (& that is likely already an overwhelming amount of data for the local police to investigate)

So many cameras these days, fixed speed cameras, mobile speed cameras, variable speed cameras, average speed cameras, sound cameras, congestion zone cameras, ULEZ cameras, cctv cameras, & the above mentioned MOT cameras….

Missed any?

There are probably other, although none of them bother me in the slightest. Could do with a few more round here.

So? because as always, these kind of facilities get abused eventually / mission creep. One day they are for checking MOTs (they don't), the next day for reporting people outside during a lockdown..... I dramatise of course, but, well, we did have "lockdowns" and they did use cameras (including drones).

Its all very well supporting tech to catch "wrong uns", but, sometimes the people who decide who IS indeed a "wrong un" are not the people we'd like to be in that position of power and we might not agree with them. This is why these kind of monitoring systems need to be kept in check and under tight control.

At the end of the day, speaking for myself, I'd like the ability to travel from A to B, be it in a car, or on foot, and make at least some of the journey without being recorded by a camera. You may not be bothered, but I'd like the choice.
