Long story short - I've been asked to collect a car from a garage and drive it to a friend's house.

Do I need to arrange some kind of day Insurance or will I be covered by the "Driving Other cars" clause on my own insurance policy?

You should be covered for third party.

Is the vehicle also insured under it's own policy.

A lot of DOC cover requires the vehicle also be insured under it's own policy.

I'm no expert, but I imagine if the other car is insured in someone else's name, you'll be OK. If it's otherwise uninsured, I would think you'd need to get day-cover.

Most that I've come across at work (roads policing so a daily occurrence for me) require the car to be insured itself. You also can't own both vehicles (you've said dropping it to a friends, is it yours or your friends?).

Some also have a limit on price of the car. £25,000 seems the number I remember of the top of my head.

It may be worth looking at Cuvva the app. I paid £12 for two hours fully comp.

That's what I thought as well. No it isn't covered by insurance once I drive it off the dealer forecourt.

I got a quote from GetShorty - £35 for the day.

I was just thinking - this must be a regular occurrence for everybody who buys a second hand car?

Read your policy wording and certificate, it will state the exact requirements and is the only way to be sure.

Here's an example from mine (Direct Line), it does not require the other vehicle to have a policy in force:

I bought a car recently from.a dealer which is used. The dealer offered me 5 day drive away cover for a price, didnt ask what the price was as I arranged my own policy for the car.

Dealers do have facilities usually, sometimes they will do.it for free or as part of the sale and sometimes not.

If it's a second car often your DOC cover will exclude other cars owned by you etc.

Read your policy document, not just the certificate.

Ask the dealer to put you and the car on his trader's policy for the day.

That's only for rare policies that give comp DOC. For 99% of DOC clauses, as it's tpo cover, the value of the car you're driving is completely irrelevant.

Apparently the dealer doesn't offer this.

It won't be owned by me.

However on a related matter is it "cars "cars owned by me" or "cars in my household"? Since it was mentioned on Pistonheads a few years ago I've made sure I'm a named driver on both my wife and my daughter's cars rather than assume DOC would cover me. However as they're now owned by me does that mean DOC would have been sufficient for me?

DOC is almost always third party only, so better to be named driver if the policy is fully comp

Remember as soon as you stop driving your mate’s car it’s not insured, so you can’t leave it parked on the road, place where public have access etc.

Unless you prang it! We had a client who borrowed a friend's XJ220 and relied on his (TPO) DOC extension for cover.

Welcome.

We bought a second car from a guy and insured it instantly via this new fangled internet thing.

Countdown's problem isn't as straightforward as that.

As above, we bought a new car from a main dealer a few years back and they offered us 5 (or 7?) days insurance FOC.

Don't know if there were any restrictions or fancy T&Cs as we already had insurance and so didn't need it.

Also not been offered similar since on new car purchases so maybe not a 'thing' anymore?

Welcome.
