Evening. Car parked in car park, car next to us opened their door and made contact with our car, taking a chip out of the paint on rear qtr panel. All witnessed, conversation all cordial, 3rd party
gave contact details. I got a quote for repair of £180. Contacted 3rd party and they have come back with they want to go through insurer. There's no damage to their door edge.
I'm starting to get a bit twitchy. They are asking for my ins details, which they don't need.
They apparently have 15 yrs ncd.
I don't understand why they want to through ins.

With possible impact on my premium, is it easier to swallow the 180 to avoid any potential issues with insurance?

It isn't worth going through your insurance for £180. I think the other person knows that you won't go ahead with the claim and they'll get out of paying.

Is £180 for a smart repair?

Your dead on, had same thing happen to mine years back and I let it go after promise of covering it changed to decision to claim on their insurance.

Call thier bluff, but tell them as they're the responsible party, you're claiming off them. I suspect the voluntary excess most people have on thier policy is between £250 and £500, son they will end up paying out of pocket anyway.

Alternatively, remind them you know thier registration number and are not above looking for it in forthcoming weeks, whilst in possession of a pin hammer. biglaugh

The third party will not pay any excess as that is only when you claim for your own damage.

That quote is at a mates bodyshop. That's for an isolated colour coat repair and blow in then full panel clear coat.

If they want to through insurance then 2 can play.

Get a quote from an expensive body shop and send that to them, the £180 may look quite attractive. They do rather sound like twunts who need their nose put out of joint.

An expensive quote won't make any difference to them though if they have already decided to put it through insurance (which is of course their right to do so).

Agreed but the OP only has a mates rate quote, if it has to go through the insurance then a proper quote is needed.

I had similar parking incident in the car park at the Doctors, older driver scraped the side of my car while has trying to park, got a similar cheap quote for £180 to fix. Cue disagreement because he thought it expensive as his last car repair was only £100 to paint the whole side of his car. Completely oblivious to the fact he only paid his excess not the total cost.

They are absolutely entitled to go thru insurance. But they cannot force you to go thru your insurers. If they want to go thru insurance, fine. Send them your estimate holding them responsible, and let them pass on to their insurers. Their insurer will then contact you to sort out settlement.

Sounds like they've accepted liability without question. In which case, let them do what they like. It'll be them paying, either directly out of their own pocket, or indirectly via their insurance. As long as it wasn't coming out of my pocket, I'd let them get on with it.

If he wants to go through insurance he will have to give you insurance. Then they can sort it out. He'll end up paying so what's the fuss?

I think everyone is forgetting that as soon as it goes through insurance, the third party will deny all responsibility.

Forget what he said to you previously, they get a real bad dose of amnesia when their insurance company gets involved.

Probably but these twunts who damage other people's cars because they don't care or are to thick to be considerate deserve a bit of grief! Anyway they will get a black mark on their records.

Yes, do this. It’s £180 which is nothing, get it repaired and move on with life. It’s a car, not a priceless work of art.

That is my concern in a nutshell. Admitted liability at time of event but has been very carful.with their words in msg. I can see me losing full ncd and increase in premium over 180 quid.
