I’ve noticed recently the sheer number of red light runners. It seems like it has increased rapidly over the last year or so (or I’m taking more notice).
The chances of getting caught are pretty minimal unless they have cameras so it seems they take the risk.
I can partly understand it as the wait on red on some traffic lights is glacial and at some locations such as roundabouts, they don’t even need to be switched on most of the time.
We are being controlled more and more these days and I think some are just basically sticking two fingers up to authority.
I mean the police do nothing as they’re too busy performing their glorified social worker role although motorists are an easy target.

Problem/profitable spots have/get red light cameras, rest of it is down to luck of police presence or dashcam grass.

Not ran one in a while, last one was a while ago and deliberate as turning left onto slip road, absolutely no traffic at all with lengthy line of sight and off I went flying down ramp onto DC feeling absolutely fantastical that I was going to make my appt for the speeding course.

Red light jumpers have been around for decades, with traffic light cameras in abundance for many areas.

So, what other methods of 'control' are we under?

I was coming to a red light in my HGV at a busy crossroads in Birmingham. I had a car in front of me and two lanes of traffic to my right going straight on/right. The car in the lane next to me just carried on as the lights changed to red. The car behind him then decided a good 3 seconds after the lights had changed to just not be bothered waiting and took off and caused the oncoming car turning right to slam its brakes on as this moron just went straight on like it was fine. The thing is I looked back from my cab and there was a Police car sat 2 cars back in that lane. I poked my head out at them, looked at them with a look of are you for real and raised my hands as if to say “What the actual fk”? They looked at me then looked anywhere but at me. Up, down, out of the windows , down at the floor. The lights changed and as their lane progressed past me I looked down while shaking my head. KFC box meal on the passenger coppers lap and 2 large drinks between them. Obviously the Colonel took priority over someone nearly causing a head on smash that day.

I see people just drive through as the lights turn red every time I’m Birmingham. The standard of driving is woeful. People cutting you up, pulling out with no signals, pulling over on double reds, driving in bus lanes… i could go on.

Could stick cameras on all traffic lights and I’d be happy with it.

Red light runners are s. Me and the missus are still suffering over a year later from quite a serious smash due to the other party running a red.

Had one last night, three lanes of traffic controlled by lights coming up to a roundabout . One lane to go left at the first exit, middle lane to go straight ahead and right lane to take third exit. I come to a stop at the lights as they are on red and there is already one other car in each lane stopped on the red. Just as I come to a stop the black Audi ( no surprise there ) , in the right lane floors it while the light is still red and goes across the other two lanes to take the first exit.

Be careful with your safety suggestion as you will have the CT crew crying mission creep.

Is the only reason you stop at red lights the fear/risk of being caught?

We really are fked as a society if that is how everyone thinks.

Yes it would possibly catch the offenders.
Numerous times I’ve gone through just as they’re switching to Amber then watched in my mirror as the vehicle behind has gone through (and in some cases the vehicle after that too).
However there are traffic lights on roundabouts that operate 24 hours a day that really really shouldn’t be on 24/7 - there’s no need for them and hence my feeling of being controlled more and more.
Why don’t we operate something like in Portugal where they have flashing ambers on quieter crossroads after a certain time which basically means proceed with caution. Everyone has to slow down - of course the idiots over here would press on regardless. The same operates on other roads where if you go over the speed limit, the lights change to red.
The standard of driving in this country has got worse over a period of time - it’s necessarily new drivers but makes you wonder how some others who should know better passed their test!

If I'm driving back from work at stupid AM and I'm sat at a pointless roundabout red-light...I'm not waiting at that red-light

Perhaps the idiots think some warning alarm will go off in the car? I cannot imagine why anyone would risk running a red light, it’s just asking for a crash.

I tend to have to brake hard for a car pulling out of a junction on most motorbike rides and quite often when car driving….I think people may have their mind on other things.

New traffic lights keep getting put in, but you very rarely see any removed. I guess that if someone has been stopped at several sets of traffic lights in a short time, often for no good reason, they might end up just getting fed up with it and jump the lights if they can see there’s nothing coming.

Perhaps we could do better with going to flashing ambers at quiet times of day.

Also you can't turn left at a red light like you can in other countries.

There's so many pointless red lights stopping you turn left round by me it's a joke.

Far too many rules, too much signage and too many red lights in this country.

Running a red is far more dangerous than doing 35 in a 30. I'd be all for more traffic light cameras.

I drive through Salford. Red lights appear to be optional.

Never done so myself until this year, but 4-5 times this year. Each time was due to temporary traffic lights being stuck on red. Sometimes both ends were stuck on red, and at other times one end was stuck on green while my end was stuck on red.

Has anyone else noticed an increase in temp lights being stuck on red? Some sort of failed attempt to 'smarten' them?

Is it normal to report to police, or to stop nearby and look for signage with a private number to call?
