I was on the way home after a 5 hour drive when I went past this speed camera doing 52mph in a 40mph zone.

I have a couple questions if someone can please help me and put my mind at ease, I'm an idiot but it was an honest mistake and brief lack of concentration.

Is this an average speed camera or normal speed camera?
Does this camera cover both lanes including the left hand lane too?

The red arrow shows my journey/direction. The 2 blue crosses are speed cameras on this road. Both the cameras are in a 40mph zone which both then change to national speed limit after the camera.
As I only went past one camera at 52mph, am I safe?

There are only two cameras on this section of the A66 as far as I can see. I only saw the one in the picture whilst driving but after checking Google earth I found the other one further down the road which I did not go past. Because there is only two does this mean it is not an average speed camera? There were no signs saying average speed camera either

Looks like an average speed camera, but could just be CCTV, ANPR or anything really.

Looks like an average speed camera to me too, its pretty much identical to the ones used on the A500 and A50 on the way to Manchester. I'm not sure how many you need to pass for it to calculate the average, presumably two is enough over a known distance but I'm just a layman and don't have a working knowledge of them.

Its a pair of average speed cameras, one at either end of the village.

This is my take on your question.

To me, it looks like the start/finish of an average speed detection system . However, it might not be.

There was one just like this on the A1 near Grantham during long term roadworks.

If I remember correctly the temporary signs indicated average speed check.

For some time I assumed it was the start/finish of an average speed system.

However, the camera, identical to yours was actually a speed detection camera and not the start of an average speed check.

Thousands of motorists were prosecuted.

When I did a careful reccy there were barely detectable metal studs in the road accompanying the camera. Which to me confirmed it was a speed detection camera and not part of an average speed set up.

So, studs or lack of might confirm the actuality.

Hopefully, someone will come along with more in depth knowledge to confirm or deny my account.

Hope this is of some help.

Yeah, I go through there fairly regularly. There’s a pair of average speed cameras at both entrance / exits to the village. The other one that compliments the one you have pictured is near the petrol station.

The whole A66 is now well patrolled with speed camera vans aswell.

Do you know this village personally? How sure are you?
Thanks

So you've driven past this exact camera? So both the blue crosses are average speed cameras 100%? Which would mean I'll be okay as I only went past one at 52mph?

Well. That would depend on the average…

Have you ever managed to go through only one average camera? They do tend to come in pairs, at least.

However, the OP didn’t say he only went through one camera. He says he only went through one at 52mph. He could well have gone through another one at a different, possible legal, speed.

Hence the statement about average…

He went through a pair, unless he turned off at the cafe.

Edited to add - just looked at the original sketch. He did turn from the cafe, so only though one camera.

All is good OP.

They are average speed cameras covering Kirkby Thore village (home to Helen Skelton btw!). They are there as the junction by The Bridge is/was notorious for traffic entering and exiting Main St to access the British Gypsum plant.

However they do only cover the whole stretch of the A66, and if you've joined halfway at Main St, then you can't be caught, but Cumbria Police are very hot on speeding on the A66, they regularly cover that section from Penrith to Brough ads the single carriageway sections have an appalling accident record.

Slightly off topic, the Transport Secretary still hasn't approved the full dualling of the A66 from Penrith to Scotch Corner yet.

If you were heading northbound and drove past the first camera at 52 mph then turned right towards Kirkby Thorpe, or stopped anywhere else before you got to the second camera, then you are as safe as anyone can be driving at 52 mph in a 40 mph limit. smile

I think people have assumed that you only drove past the first camera in excess of the limit but drove past the second within the limit.

The sketch in the OP is quite clear, no assumptions required.

But inconsistent with the text. Assumption necessary.

So I went past the first camera (the top blue X) then turned left into kikby thore. I stayed in the village for about an hour then I went back on myself (shown by the red arrow) and went past the same speed camera at 52mph. So I've only gone past that one camera but I've gone past it twice. Can it get an average speed that?
