I looked up a car today on total car check and noticed it had more than 365 days road tax, which I thought was impossible so thought it was probably an error.

Checked on the dvla and it does say expires 1 Dec 2024, so 12 months and a week away.

How does this happen?

The tax probably ran out on the 30th of November, you can renew from the 5th of the month online.
If you want to send your documents to the DVLA you can do it up to 2 months in advance.

I think they had a start date in the future due to having some tax left?

I've got this on my car. It's set as an annual direct debit which doesn't go until 5th Dec but tax is already showing as paid till next year.

No mystery about this - the renewal notice comes through about 14 days in advance, so when tax is renewed it will show as up to 365+14 days - i.e. 14 days of remaining + 365 days of renewal.

Yeah that makes sense, I've done auto renewals since it first started about 10 years ago, so I've only taxed a car from sorn or as a new keeper and then it starts from the start of the month you are already in.
Now I remember the hassle of having to wait till half way through the month to join an endless post office queue.
