One for any Police experts out there.

Was sat in traffic on the Northbound stretch of the Tinsley Viaduct under the M1 in Sheffield earlier this week about 8:15am.

Was passed by 4x unmarked Octavia vRS’s, 3x unmarked X5’s, 1x Police van and 2x marked X5’s all in convoy, travelling at speed, all with full sirens and blue lights.

Any ideas why so many would be travelling together? Just curious.

Many years ago i experienced the exact same on the M6 near Penrith and Carlisle.

It was very late at night and this part of the M6 was absolutely empty, I settled in to make some good progress ;-)

Then I saw some flashing blue lights behind me.

I thought st I’m going to get pulled over. But to my surprise the flashing blue lights ignored me and carried on past. Not just one unmarked car but several of them in a convoy.

It was a very odd experience. It made me wonder what major incident was happening up the road? Had Sellafield gone into meltdown after a tsunami?

Could be a multitude of reasons

Anything from a training exercise to something that "those who need to know, know, those that dont need to know dont"

What type of Police van / HMP van /"bullion van"

Its not just Police that have un unmarked cars with blue lights

I think diplomatic cars have too. A friend reports an interesting ride through London in (IIRC) a BMW 7 series.

Going back a bit a whole bunch of unmarked cars with blue and sirens passed me on the M42 - what was remarkable is that they were all ordinary oldish cars and included a quite battered looking VW T4 van.

I had it once. Was heading home from my dads and making good progress. A1 to A421 then through MK is my route. Was making progress down the A1 when 5 liveried up X5's, 3 blacked out range rovers and several motorbikes came piling out of a junction near Kimbolton. As in all streamed out in one solid pack causing everyone in L1 to take evasive action to move out their way. Motorcycle outriders agressivly making people move out of the way but they weren't speeding

I was ahead as I saw them come off the slip, and tbh carried on at the speed I was (not license loosing but probably 70+-a tiny bit)

10 or so miles later they are behind me on the a421. I remember myself and the 3 cars infront of me who were happily cracking on (lovely road the a421, can do it end to end quite briskly) all having to pull out of L2 as this clown convoy creeped up behind us and then past. None of us had the bottle to get behind the convoy and try to crack on again so for 6 miles we just wafted along at 50mph. They all pulled off past Bedford and I remember the same 4 of us clipping straight back into L2 and away. Was on the phone to my mum at the time and remember swearing at them impeding progress.

Once on the M40 we had 4/5 range rovers with escorts scream past doing a speed more appropriate to their mission, sure I read it was some parts of the royal family (M40 Northbound by Stokenchurch)

Travellers travelling in a rush?

I think I might have called in and reported a speeding convoy of oldish cars and a battered van all showing blue lights, just to see what they said.

I occasionally see fast-moving groups of dark blue usually Audis or BMWs with hidden blue lights on the A34 in West Berkshire.
