Don't come to Essex, and speed even slightly, or you'll be hit with draconian punishment.

https://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/23988279.south-es...

Sheldon John Hurrell, of Westborough Road, Westcliff, was caught speeding in Nevendon last October.
The 58-year-old was driving a Ford Focus on A127 Southend Arterial Road between Nevendon and Laindon.
Hurrell was driving at 57 miles per hour and the road had a speed limit of 50 miles per hour.
He pleaded guilty in May this year and appeared in Southend Magistrates’ Court on August 9 where he was fined £307.
Hurrell was also disqualified from driving for six months and had three points added to his licence

Mohammed Jamil Ahmed, of Beaumont Square, exceeded the 50mph speed limit on the A13 in Aveley on October 27 last year when his BMW was recorded at 69 miles per hour by means of Vectoras. The offence was proved via the single justice procedure on October 18 and Ahmed was fined £440 and banned from driving for six months. He must also pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £176 and costs of £90.

Both of those roads are dual carriageways, the A127 has a long section with an average (50 mph) camera system.

Interesting they both got to court. Is there more to these stories?

that can't be right - just for that speed. Must be more to it.

Sound like he got to 12 points with the latest 3 maybe? The ban is odd.

The 'victim surcharge' - what does that mean and who is the victim?

Weirdly, yesterday I was doing much more than that over a 70mph limit, in the dark, and I'm pretty good at knowing who is coming from where when a marked car appeared behind me, without blues on.

I eased off, but didn't brake as he was (in my opinion way too close at those speeds) - but the bell end on the inside, also doing same speed hadn't spotted him , and so I couldn't get out the way to the next lane over.

Backed down to around 80mph, and managed to get across and he kept going past me - didn't even look across at me and he went back up to I guess north of 90mph.

I'm pretty sure I was in Essex - M25 towards the bridge

Let me make a guess

Both drivers already had numerous points and weren’t eligible for Fixed penalties or Speed awareness courses and so were summoned to court and I presume banned under the totting rules as they exceeded 12 points

Just a guess mind

Of course there is more to the stories.

OP is being slightly dramatic!

That's what will happen if you are repeat offending when it comes to speeding. It's a shame neither the article nor the OP manages to report in a balanced manner.

I've reported what was published. Can't do anything else really.

I've used the A127 for more than a decade. I don't know how you manage to actually speed there with all the signs for it.

But the actual numbers don't really add up with the general guidance principles.

Yet you call them draconian but have no idea of the state of their licence at the time of the offence.

Live in Southend and you cannot go above 50mph from there until almost the Dartford tunnel where it reduces again to 50MPH.

Speed limit is all average cameras for over 20 miles and was decreased by Basildon Council for "Emission" reasons, just a lucky coincidence i suppose that they have had a windfall as a result of the reduce limit.

They used to have a speed camera just as you came in to Southend that was on a bend that used to catch lots of visitors coming to the seaside. This of course prompted people to spend freely and return promptly to the area!

Weird that the middle example was not included...could it be because it dilutes the horror of the post somewhat...getmecoat

Robert Blake

Robert Blake, of Westleigh Avenue, Leigh, was driving on the A127 in Havering on May 11 when his BMW was recorded exceeding the 50mph limit.

Blake, 56, was recorded speeding at 79 miles per hour by means of Pro laser 4.

He admitted the offence via the single justice procedure on November 16 and was fined £825.

He must also pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £330 and costs of £110. His driving record endorsed with 6 points.

The headline in the article says South Essex drivers handed largest fines this year, so presumably it's a roundup of the worst cases/drivers rather than routine fines as implied by the OP.

Do they get the money from speeding penalties and fines?

Essex police have always been wkers tbh. The A127 used to flow freely, now it’s yet another bottleneck revenue stream. Must be more to both offences, but yes, don’t get caught speeding in Essex because speeding is much more serious than knife/drug/thefts etc.

You do realise that setting speed limits are nothing to do with the Police and that enforcement is run by Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERPS) which is led by Essex County Council .. who coincidentally ( along with other councils in SERPS ) are responsible for setting the speed limits

Oh and the money from speeding offences doesn’t go to Essex Police either

Driving standards in Essex are generally very poor.

Either people drive really fast or really badly or both.

Endemic as much as the actual enforcement is.

Speeding in Essex attracts the same punishment as speeding anywhere else in England. The stories are the normal rubbish clickbait media and there will be a lot more to it. "Man jailed for doing 38 in 30" has been a good one in the past when actually they are jailed for PCOJ

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story

Lots more.

The first part is right, and it then totted up to 12 points and he got disqualified for 6 months under the totting rules, why is that odd?

The victim surcharge is a statutory amount that all people convicted of an offence in court have to pay (the exact amount depends on what other penalties they get).

It goes towards funding services for victims of crime in general - not to the victim of this crime in particular (if there even is one).
