From a test in October 2022.

Very low mileage car I am thinking of buying, all the mileage entries add up but then October 22 it says 'unknown'. No massive jump or that since in the mileage, the pattern seems reasonable.

Could it be a covid extension test? Although I thought they were listed as advisories? Garage selling says nothing to worry about smile

Any thoughts?

Could be several reasons. The tester forgot to write it down and couldn't go back to read it (needed power, couldn't be arsed etc.). The backlight in the odometer (often happens) had gone. The odometer wasn't fitted maybe (if separate to the speedometer).

I have a mileage unknown from a test in 2020 and the advisory states “Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
COVID-19 6 MONTH EXTENSION”

2022 is well beyond when they were offering the Covid extensions isn’t it?

Thanks for above. It does sound outside the COVID extension range yes.

Appreciate the posts and thoughts.

I have one of those on my car history, where the mileage display is intermittent, and mot day was one of the times it declined to take part.

one of my cars has had at least 3 speedos in its 27 year life and one of those didn't actually work for (prob) about 5 years whilst it was installed smile

Thanks all. I think my own feeling now is had this happened to me when my car was tested, I'd do what I could to have it rectified. I'd know it will raise concerns so get it changed.

Or at least be sure I can explain it all with some decent paperwork.

I'll look elsewhere - appreciate the responses.

Depends on the problem, as i think my tester said he only had 4 weeks grace to be able to add it afterwards, if i called in later when it was working.

If the seller can reasonably explain, and the mileage appears genuine otherwise, then is there an issue?

Agree, I will ask for a more detailed explanation - so far I just got the 'ah, nothing to worry about, happens a lot'

What car is it?

In lots of VAG cars the odometer disappears when cruise control is switched on (even when stationary and cruise not in use) so to see the mileage you have to fiddle around with the cruise control switch.

Could be something like that.

BMW X5. Dealer says he suspects the pixels on the speedometer were damaged, says it's common on these cars.......

X5 is a pain to get the milage up though tbh, if it's not already displayed it can be a proper faff with pushing buttons to get it up.

Normal for backlight failure too OP, had this a few times and it forewarned electrical issues, in my cases an alternator was on way out and needed a new one/regulator, and another car the battery terminals needed a clean as had gone green with build up which fixed the backlight in both cases.

If I have a claim on a limited miles Odo monitored policy and forget to inform them of the reading, I will use that excuse laugh

We've got them at work, it can be funny watching people get angry flailing around with the storks and wheel buttons trying to find the milage for the vehicle logs hehe

Storks can be very uncooperative at times. Especially when carrying babies smile
