Increasingly i am finding myself stuck at 40 and 50mph in a train of cars on the widest of NSL A and B roads. Everywhere i turn there seems to be another "motorist" pottering and dawdling their way towards their final destination, terrified by the thought that speed kills and cars are the devil reincarnate. I've only been driving 3 years and i am quite happy to sit at the posted speed limit providing its not a motorway or a deserted nanny state 50 limit A-road, but in those 3 yars ive noticed the average speed has dramatically decreased, and drivers as a whole seem a lot more hesitant about making swift and positive judgements during their journeys.

oh and not to mention their insistance on maintaining that 40mph cruise control as they enter villages with 30 limits

Yes I'm afraid you're right. I've noticed the same thing.

These slowsters (for that is what they're called) are a growing cancer on our roads, and I sincerely believe that the number of kamikaze overtaking manouvres catalysed by their anti-social driving are having a real detrimental effect on deaths on our roads.

What about the ones who'll flash at you when you finally manage to get past!

Indeed, and German Autobahns with no limits are the safest roads in Europe.

Surely noone here would advocate that these people doing 40 in an NSL go faster than the speed at which they feel comfortable proceeding?

If we're all such good drivers, I'm sure we'll be able to hang back until the opportunity arises and pass when it does, making discreet progress.

Some would suggest that these driver's skills are not up to standard and should be removed from the roads......

Not me though - I demand it

Agreed - but then again they shouldn't be selfish bastards and should move over when they have collected a number of cars behind them. Oooh, 5 would be a good number, like in Canada...

And the only time these aformentioned feckwits actually speed up is when you do pass them.

I often get stuck behind someone doing 25ish in a 30 even when the road is quiet; I hate being under-taken by bicycles!

I'm rather prejudiced in that I think if they're going that slow for no reason they dont know how to drive.
Usually proved correct at some point when they go straight through a zebra crossing with people waiting to cross - oblivious!
Seen it many times.

Your observation is 100% - they will be chatting to their passengers, looking at the view, otherwise not paying attention, but legal, legal, legal.

If it was saving lives we might have a hard job arguing against it but.....

Not when they are nose to tail for a mile - they rarely leave more than a half second gap, barely enough to squeeze into and if you dare try and wake then up they get right pissy. Its no pleasure when there is a string of them (for me anyway)

Of course, the roads aren't there for your pleasure - the slowsters have as much right as you do to use them.

I hate congestion as much as the next person, and would rather be hooning along an empty road at warp factor 7. I can feel my blood start to boil when I sit behind a car that belongs to the 40-everywhere club.

However - I think this as a weakness in my driving, and resist the urge to let the red mist descend. Hang back. See if you can pick off one or two safely. Try an alternative route. Take a break - the road will be fun again in 10 minutes.

This is the sort of road they love. If you do not feel safe doing 60 on a road like that you should not be on the road full stop.

Yes, that's fine, trouble is, it doesnt work like that!!!!!!!
I am all too often stuck behing people who obviosly cannot drive, or are too scared of their own shadow. Driving at a constant speed I can live with, allowing me to perform a safe overtaking manoever when the pportunity arises, but, more often than not, the speed is erratic, they brake for no apparent reason, they brake to 15-20mph at the merest hint of a curve in the road,, it goes on, these people are as, if not at times, more unsafe and scarey than 'Boy Racers'!
