Caught driving without insurance I thought I’d changed my policy in October but somehow it never went through. The officer got me to insure the car on the spot then told me to make sure I’m more vigilant in the future. He took all my details and said il receive a letter in the post. It’s my first ever offence what should I expect? Uk resident

My wife had exactly the same. Insure it there and then or the car's impounded, so she did. This was about six months ago, and her insurance had lapsed by a month. Never heard anything since.

Did the officer caution you, or say anything to indicate that you would be prosecuted or get a FPN for the offence of no insurance?

Since you arranged cover on the spot, that may be the end of if, however I suspect that you will probably get an FPN in the post.

I believe that no insurance currently awards 6 points as standard.

6 points and £100 fine is the standard penalty.

Whenever you renew insurance, whether auto-renew or not, you should always get a new certificate of insurance. I always print that an put it in the glove box.

I always make sure the documents have come through, either via email or that I can download them from the insurer's website and, either way, save them in my iCloud drive to access on my phone. Also, on the day that my new cover kicks in I check on AskMID that my car is howing as insured. That might just be me being overly diligent though.

What happens there about insuring on the spot? When asked about points etc the answer would be no but if and when you receive the fine and points would you have to tell the insurance and then wouldn’t they question the date of the offence compared to policy start date or am I over thinking this.

I don't leave anything identifying in my glove box anymore, once left log book in there with policy, stolen and sold before I knew it was gone whilst on a 4 week break. Never again.

I thought exactly the same. Also would you do it via a comparison website or direct to the previous insurer and hope they don't pull your pants down?

If you were completing a form online for Insurance there would be a question about current or pending offences. My view is that if you had a letter about a Court date for say, speeding, then you should let the Insurer know on the phone. Right now, the OP has not had notification and has not been convicted. And it could be possible for the case to be dropped.

You’re overthinking it. My wife was caught by a plod going in the opposite direction who turned around and blue lighted her. She phoned me, I found her (now expired) documents and gave her the relevant renewal numbers. She phoned the insurers, renewed there and then, got told off by plod for being a div and was then let on her way. As I said above this was months ago and we’ve heard nothing since, and I suspect we’ll hear nothing in future either.

A good friend of mine got caught in his E type. Simply forgot to renew! 3 points, a fine, and the car was impounded. He’s not the type to fail an attitude test either 🤢

Amazed that anyone can 'forget' their car insurance.

Does nobody keep a diary note ?.

Don't all Insurance companies send out renewal papers ?

Do lots of people forget their house insurance too ?

As above, if dealt with by fixed penalty, it'll be 6 points & £300.

If the matter was proceeded to court, it's 6-8 points or a ban, a means related fine and a surcharge upon conviction.

How it will affect premiums for the next 5 years will be decided by your insurer.

If court proceedings then level 5 fine. I.e. unlimited.

The surcharge is capped at £2k.

I always thought no insurance meant automatic seizure of the car and a long walk home. Have I been watching too much Traffic Cops?!

Yeah it was a stupid mistake on my behalf I thought I’d taken out the new policy but I hadn’t signed a form or something so the policy never started. I’ve always been very careful with my license, cars are my main hobby so I’d never risk it over £300 a year
