Can I tax the van with nothing except the reg? It runs out now and I expect the nasty little Adolf's will fine me even though it's not on the road

Gov.uk website offers me no way to buy it except by using silly ref numbers on reminder/v5 but I'm in a distant land far far away, and not back for a week.

If you’re not back for a week, I really wouldn’t worry about it.

Opposite problem here.

I want to SORN a car that's locked in ther garage, currently broken. I need a tax reminder or my V5 to do it. I can't find either without digging around but there doesn't appear to be another way.

Heard someone got unlucky, bought a van, forgot about the tax being due 4 months later, within a week of it running out some DVLA enforcement van came round and made sure it wouldn't be stolen.

Edit: I would ring DVLA Car Tax number and tell them your far away and it needs to be taxed and can't have someone get docs etc...

They should oblige, or get a Ref No from manager if claims he can't, so you can show Nazi's their own system prevented it.

I was going to suggest a V62 form (IIRC) at the Post Office if you don't have any docs like a V5, but if the reason you don't have any docs is that you aren't in the country, that would not be much help... lol

Was this a long time ago, or are vans taxed differently to cars?

With a car, it has to be taxed by the new owner on purchase - so it couldn’t run out 4 mths later.

You mean he forgot about the tax being due immediately he bought the van?

If you know any car traders personally they may be able to put you in contact with a man who can tax anything with no docs for a fee

ETA: he actually has a website now hehehttps://www.roadtaxmartin.com/.

It says: No V5? - Old V5? - No MOT? - No Logbook? - NO PROBLEM!
(Note, looks like you do need insurance).
How does that work legally without an MOT?

You wont need insurance as you haven't needed that for taxing for years. I've taxed many cars with him ( the number on his website matches the one in my phone) and you send him the money and in return you get a Post Office receipt showing it has been taxed.

You say that your van is parked off the road?

On your drive?

If so, stop worrying!

If it's parked at the curb outside your home, or in a carpark, start getting worried!

Probably, if not delaying keeper change as part of sale.
