Can you drive to a mot station without tax?
Discussion
The rules for taxing and registering your vehicle are set out in the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act (1994). The act states that “a vehicle does not need to be taxed if used solely for the purpose of attending a pre-arranged compulsory test or examination” — in your case an MoT test.
My understanding is that includes both going and returning. Don't stop at the shops on the way, the trip must be only for the purpose of the MoT.

Depends if it passes the MOT.... Can't tax it without one. A major/do not drive fault would mean the car has to stay at thr garage or be trailered home. A non major fault allows the car to be driven home for repairs
This I learned last year after my usual May MOT lapsed whilst I was abroad and not in the country until September. Car was Sorned in the meantime so I had to pre-book the MOT and drive down. It wasn't a pleasant feeling in all honesty! Fortunately the car passed first attempt. A few tips for the OP and others on this:
1. It's a good idea to get a text message / WhatsApp exchange with the garage as evidence showing you requesting the booking for the date you intend to drive down and the mechanic confirming it. Just in case.
2. On that note, it's best you take it to a place that is an actual MOT test station and not a garage that takes it to one and risks it being parked up on the public highway and clamped.
3. The question of 'can I take the car to be taxed or do I need to go to the Post Office and leave the car where it is' is a bit redundant, certainly for 2024 when you can tax/Sorn your car online.
When the car passes its MOT it's pretty much instantaneous in terms of the DVLA's system updating so you should be able to tax your car there and then as I did.
You'll likely just need the tax reminder or the V5C reference number. I always use the latter and take a photos of all pages of the logbook once it arrives via post so that I've always got all the details to hand.
