Mrs BigRig is about to start her divorce. The company we have gone with was recommneded to us by a barrister friend (doesn't work in family law) and another friend. I did plenty of googling etc and they seem to be well reviewed.

The lawyer has sent us a draft copy of the intiial letter to be sent to her ex partner next week, and there were several spelling mistakes and a word or 2 missing that we spotted, which we have now pointed out. It's put us on edge somewhat that we could have made a poor choice as her ex is fairly wealthy and will no doubt hire top notch lawyers.

Does anyone have any advice?

I've found typos are common in draft copies. It is worrying though.

'Mrs BigRig' doesn't make sense though. Unless her ex has the same name as you.

My guess is 'Mrs' big Rig isn't actually Mrs and currently just the partner of BigRig but for PH terms we do not seem to have a DP/Darling Partner type term that they have over there on Mumsnet for our unmarried to us partner biggrin

Good luck with the divorce. My Ex lied and cheated all through proceedings, some of which I was able to prove lies, others not. I just wanted to separate and leave with what I came into the marriage with but Ex had other ideas.

How much time and money you spend worrying about it depends on what she thinks she's entitled to, and whether she just wants a clean break or to take him to the cleaners.

Wouldn't expect anyone senior to de drafting that letter. Typically you want to be paying for brains ahead of typing skills once things get in swing, but obviously it sets the wrong impression from an attention to detail perspective. Maybe approve the draft but point out there are a few mistakes in it and see if it's repeated in future correspondence.

Always worth remembering, the value in a lawyer is how well they can avoid litigation rather than run toward it with open arms!

I managed without, simply and honestly put down everything of value we had, divided it half and asked her what half she’d like. Seemed fair after 20 years and 2 kids.

Maybe your lawyer is on edge somewhat that you have been unable to spell divorce correctly in the title. wink

Looks more like a typing error than poor spelling. Although a quick proof reading should have enabled that to be corrected.

Similar for me. Only expense was drafting up the finance agreement and court fees.
Depends on how much of a dick the ex is!

If Mrs Big Rig is still married to someone else while being Mrs Big Rig surely she's Mrs Big Amist?

Whatever you do, don't watch the POL enquiry and look at any of the emails and letters from their so called professionals don't confuse ability with qualifications.

In my limited experience you tend to find out whether you hired a good one or not by comparing them to the other side when it starts getting "exciting".

Either I hired very very good ones, or my ex hired very very bad ones. I grumbled like mad about costs at the beginning but concluded at the end they were worth every penny and more.

Could be hehe

(The username came from a very old Chris Moyles clip where they were talking about dinner and Holly Willoughby was baffled by what 'pork in cider' might be, thinking it was 'insider'.)

Talk to a number of them for the 'free' hour or so consultation, see who considers your specific circumstances and review the conversations after you've spoken to all of them to see who was most proactive and covered the relevent and important topics.
